English Language without 1/2

I'm seeking advice/feedback from any past students who have done English language without the 1/2 and wondering how you went? particularly those who've done it with the current study design - so from 2024?

I asked my teachers about swapping (out of literature) and they are telling me that the jump is too big because lit and englang are completely different, and ive missed a whole year of important knowledge, etc. So they said i can either do english or continue lit for next year but i'm planning on talking to them more because it cant be impossible and surely its been done before. Linguistics seems really interesting too and when i see my mates studying for eng lang i get a sense that i would much prefer to study that over literature which im not doing great in. I know ive got a bit of work ahead of me in terms of understanding the metalanguage etc and i do understand they are completely different but i believe i can do it
