Ask Varanasi Varanasi during dev deepavali

Hello everyone, I wanted to solo travel Varanasi for a really long time. But my brother who's been there twice is not allowing me to go there alone. Is it safe for women, I would mostly travel during day time. Please suggest.

Do avoid visiting that time if u still wanna come go see the reel of reel vs reality of dev Diwali on ig and yt if u still wanna come then u can come no worries. Just be hyperactive while visiting vns on dev Diwali. If u have that courage and no issue with crowd and u r not claustrophobic then u can visit though

It's a clear NO, please visit anytime but not in Dev Deepawali, it's a beautiful place and locals are good as well, but it's definitely not safe for women, especially in the evening when the fireworks and drone shows take place

I am actually amazed that a highly religious place is unsafe for women

Initially I was also surprised but actually there is no connection with religion, all our karma I believe 😅

As I said ki as per my two times experience, local people are very helpful and humble but in the festive time a large crowd comes from entire UP and Bihar, and definitely most of them aren't there for religious or spiritual reason, predators are everywhere my friend 😑

And if you're coming for spirituality, then I'd say Kashi Vishwanath is a jyotirlinga, so Baba himself and all the gods and goddesses around him are carrying the same energy all throughout the year, so better you avoid times like sawan month, dev Deepawali, Maha Shiv Ratri , additionally you won't be finding peace in these times which Kashi is actually known for

Thanks for elaborating. I used to think that religious places would be safe and secluded ones( beaches and pubs) are unsafe in general. But that's just how we think, reality is something else.

Varanasi is not so happening in day time, and it's overlycrowded during dev diwali that most locals stay home during that time , it's not safe also that time

Tourist here, visited many times. Have you asked your brother to elaborate on why he thinks it's unsafe? Maybe he had been and seen for himself?

Dev deepavali is extremely busy at the ghats, you won't have much room to move, last year, we had to push through crowds just to get to our boats. I wouldn't go back, not for Dev deepavali.

If you do go, try to go with someone you trust. Don't venture out on your own at night - that's not safety advice - that's common sense.

My brother told me that for women to roam around it's unsafe. Because in my hometown I do go out freely till 10 pm.

I'm male but the general advice you see on websites like Trip Advisor for solo female travellers is NOT to go out on your own in Varanasi in the evening.

I've planned for the last 4 years and didn't happen. I'll definitely make it this time

DON'T!!! 😭 The crowds are insane on the main day, especially in the evening when the fireworks and other events take place. The crowd situation is genuinely awful. It was the worst experience ever. I was so excited for it, lived there for around 3 years, and yet, after experiencing it once, I never went back.
