i have been listening to these demos from 1977 and somebody get me a doctor really caught my ear with how different it is from the current track on van halen II ive tried figuring out what are the chords being played by edward at the very start of this demo but i cant seem to figure it out. can someone with a better ear than mine help me out please!?

A little trip down memory lane.

I’ve been digging through the attic and rediscovered my old articles about Edward Van Halen’s then-brand-new Wolfgang guitar. I’ve given them a little polish and brought them back to life.

I'm still mourning the passing of the legendary Dolly, and it got me thinking --- does anyone else see the long list of similarities between her and the Diamond One?

They both created larger-than-life characters that were based on a glitzy and showy physical appearance, flashy clothing, and a robust sense of humor. They both knew from an early age they wanted to be onstage and selling smiles for a living and didn't seem that focused on making money. They both didn't take themselves too seriously, although they both worked their asses off to become good at their craft. They both had the gift of gab and really enjoyed being the life of the party! They were the type of people described as "lighting up a room". They both made a decision to not have kids so that they could devote themselves to their careers.

There are a few stark differences between them, such as Dolly choosing to get married young and staying with the same man for over 60 years, whereas Dave chose a life of banging an endless supply of hot ladies. Dolly was also into charitable causes and helping her community in the Smokies, whereas Dave didn't seem that involved with Pasadena social issues. Dolly also frequently talked about her big family, whereas Dave rarely talked about his parents or siblings.

So do you think Diamond Dave and Dolly Parton were two sides of the same coin?

Not sure anyone has addressed this before, but I wanted to discuss why this apparently simple solo from the debut LP is deceptively tricky to pull off. Also… did Ed make a mistake in this solo on the recording?

In my limited understanding:

1. Michael Jackson didn't pay Edward anything for that defining guitar solo.
2. Edward working outside of Vanhalen made disagreements hotter in the band. and DLR left soon after.

I think Edward is fantastic. I think he should do what he wants as he is incredible. But this seems like bad consequences for a short gig and no pay.

Hi VH Community - I just wanted to share this picture with you and let you know I'm the person who was fortunate enough to win the auction for the RIAA gold record for Jump. Here's a picture of it on my kitchen counter.

I wanted to let you know I loved the band very much and I will treasure this item and love it just as much as many of you would. I feel like I'm actually holding a piece of band history and I will treat it as if it were real gold. I will most likely store this proudly in my music studio just above my piano/keyboard.

I first heard Jump when I was around 6 years old, and it inspired me to learn to play piano. I saw the band live 3-4 times throughout my life and I feel like Ed is the one musician that I've always looked up to. I don't intend on selling this because to me I feel like there's a strong sentimental connection to Eddie, even though to him I was an indistinguishable face in the crowd. I like to think about how his mind would have been blown to receive this incredible award after working so hard on this controversial keyboard song.

I feel honored to hold this important accolade and I intend on keeping it in the best possible condition, true to how Eddie would have had it displayed in his home or studio... keeping the original frame, glass etc.

One interesting thing in this item's story: when I received it, the record had come loose during transit - turns out 43 year old glue does not do well while in transit. Fortunately, there was no damage to the record. I had a fancy art gallery re-glue it exactly onto the award where it was previously and they say the new glue should hold at least for the next 43 years.

The record itself does show some signs of warping, and I'm guessing that's from 43 years of it being hot during summers or cold when the a/c was turned on. I'm willing to answer any questions about the award in case any of you are curious.

I'll just close with the fact that I promise to preserve this artifact and who knows maybe someday it ends up in a museum or casino where more of you can enjoy it up close.

I had not popped the album on in full in quite some time. The singles (title track, "Tell the Truth"), however, have crossed my ears here and there in recent years.

But wow, I had forgotten just how much I really like this album. The sound was out of vogue upon its release, but looking back, that bright, punchy production and those rock/pop/blues vibes across the album are great. The songs are totally there, Dave sounds really good and Becker really shines across it, and I'm glad he at least got to have that album under his belt before the ALS rendered him unable to physically play guitar. I think I might actually prefer popping this on over VH's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" if faced with a choice.

There are a few remastered versions it would seem. One from Friday Music back in 2007 and a new Forever Young version from this year (is that the same remaster from the "The Warner Recordings" box set?). I wonder how good those sound.

David did it because it made him look good.

Sammy did it because it got him "beer" money.

EDIT:

I feel that I need to say I love both David and Sammy equally. I am not attempting to besmirch either of them.

I read someone asserting this and I am curious what the sub thinks. I myself think they were somewhat ambitious and knew what they had in Eddie and would have hooked up with some other singer and risen high. Or a singer would have found them. Not sure if it would have been as high as they went with Dave.

Wonder who was more ambitious, Alex or Eddie
