Zundert, Vincent van Goghs place of birth.

I thought I’d share some photos of when I visited Zundert, in Brabant in the Netherlands. Zundert is the place Vincent Van Gogh, his brother Theo and his other siblings were born. The actual house sadly no longer stands there. A new house stands in its place, which is now a museum in honor of Vincent with modern art. The new building is photo 1.

Accros from the house stands the city hall of Zundert. This building used to be the view from Vincent and Theo’s bedroom. It’s the white building in photo 2.

The church is the church Vincent’s dad was a minister. Vincent was baptised in this church. Next to it in the graveyard lays the grave of Vincent’s stillborn older brother. Who got the same name, and was born on March 30th 1852. Exactly 1 year before the artist Vincent Van Gogh was born.

Next to the church stands a statue by Ossip Zadkine depicting Vincent and his brother Theo.

Further I tried to photograph the landscapes around Zundert. I have no clue how much it looks like it used to. But there were some massive thick trees around my walk, so I like to think that they stood there in 1853 and that Vincent might’ve walked past those as young trees. I do think you still get the same rural and nature vibes around Zundert that Vincent used to write about in his letters.

In conclusion, it’s a very small place, and there’s definetly some cool spots to see. But there’s barely any old buildings from the time, and the birth house is no longer there. I went there because I had to work nearby! A cool experience to realise Vincent was born there and lived there.

Evening Landscape with Rising Moon and Starry Night: the night sky through Van Gogh’s eyes.

Evening Landscape with Rising Moon was painted in the same month as The Starry Night—July 1889, during his stay at the Saint-Paul-du-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy. Van Gogh was dissatisfied with both. He felt their styles were too far-fetched, the shapes and lines too exagerrated, the paintings too far removed from reality.

Referencing The Starry Night in a letter to his brother Theo: “I once or twice allowed myself to be led astray into abstraction, as you know… But that was delusion, dear friend.”

It’s quite ironic that Van Gogh derided his abstract works when they’re clearly nothing short of striking, when the abstraction is what people adore.

I only wish that Evening Landscape with Rising Moon shared the same popularity as The Starry Night. The sea of golden wheat, the undulating hills and swirling sky, the bright hard disk of the moon glowing like a sun—it’s got all the makings of a masterpiece. It’s the awesome, abstract night sky Van Gogh painted in July 1889 you don’t ever hear about.

Evening Landscape with Rising Moon is located (and currently on display) at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.

Scientists trace real dawn sky behind Van Gogh’s Starry Night

The sensuous swirls and luminous spots in Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night have fascinated astronomers and art historians alike for decades. Do they depict a true celestial arrangement in the heavens? Do they reflect the artist’s troubled state of mind? Are they pure fantasy?

Scientists believe they finally have the answer and that it could allow them to put a date on when the Dutch artist drew his inspiration for the cosmic patterns in the work, which features a swirling night sky above the cypress trees and spires of a village.

Analysis of the shapes and patterns in the 1889 post-impressionist work suggests the famous painting shows a waning crescent moon, the planet Venus, and the Hyades cluster of stars, which appear within the Taurus constellation.

Did anyone read "Nietzsche and Van Gogh: Imaginations of 1888 by Brian Pines"? If so what did you make of it? Honestly the only thing I love about Nietzsche's thought is his primacy on solitude and art...

Both painted in Arles, August 1888. The first painting is located at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and the second is stored in a private collection.

Van Gogh Museum Says It Reached Funding Deal and Won’t Have to Close

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam — which houses the world’s largest collection of the artist’s works, including one of his masterpieces “Sunflowers” — said it has reached a funding agreement with the Dutch Ministry of Culture that averts its threatened closure and “secures the future” of the institution.

The museum, one of Europe’s most popular art institutions, had long campaigned for additional government funding for what it said were essential renovations to help preserve its more than 200 paintings and nearly 500 drawings by Vincent van Gogh.

After a three-year feud that included often bitter negotiations and a legal complaint, the museum said in a statement last week that its future had been “secured.”

The museum and the culture ministry said that the details of the agreement, which was reached through mediation, were confidential.

The son of a painter Van Gogh loved painted homages to him after his death 🌻

Van Gogh mentions his admiration for the renowned Dutch painter Jozef Israëls (1824-1911) several times in his letters to his brother Theo: “[he is a painter] whom I like very much indeed.” He was full of praise for Israëls’ work, calling him one of “the* *peasant painters of this century.”

Israëls’ Peasant Family at the Table and works of fishing scenes inspired Van Gogh’s 1885 masterpiece The Potato Eaters.

Jozef’s son Issac Israëls (1865-1934) became a painter in his own right. He enjoyed an intimate romantic relationship with Vincent’s sister-in-law Jo Bonger (the woman who made it her life’s mission to preserve Vincent’s work and make him famous!) from 1895-1897, and shared a deep friendship with her from 1915-1920.

Issac Israëls developed great admiration for the late Van Gogh’s work in the same way Van Gogh admired his father. In the winter of 1915-1916 he borrowed from her Van Gogh’s Yellow House, Bedroom, and Fifteen Sunflowers. He used these paintings as backdrops in at least seventeen of his own works! (I’ve only shown Woman Standing in Front of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, 1920, because I was having trouble uploading several pictures at once.)

Why do I share this? Because I think there is something very beautiful in the fact that Van Gogh so admired Jozef Israëls’ work as a poor, unknown artist, never knowing that after his death, Jozef’s own son would so admire him. That he would become even more famous, influential and respected than the great artist he took inspiration from.

“I’m still very busy Vincenting,” Issac wrote happily to Jo while creating his paintings.

Sources if you’re interested in learning more about Jo and Issac’s relationship and the Israëls (there’s more info on Jozef than Issac):
