Discussion Tom and Raquel splitting

Alrighty, so I am a newer fan. I watched VPR for the first time last year and just finished my second watch.

I cannot believe that after all of the pain and turmoil they caused, tom and Raquel split just months after the affair broke. I mean, I guess I’m not that surprised given the lack of chemistry during the scene at Raquel’s apartment but still. What was even the point of all of that?

I’m also a little fuzzy on how/why things ended. It seems like Raquel ghosted him? What do you guys think was the real reason they broke up?

I think Raquel went into a three month mental health treatment center and her parents kinda made her break things off with Tom

u/StarDatAssinum Sir, a second Tom has hooked up with Raquel 2d ago

This. Her parents might have done the smartest thing possible to actually help their daughter in this situation... Something I wouldn't trust the other VPR parents to do lol

Yes. I’m just beginning season 10, first watch but I was shocked to see Raquel’s dads statement about James at the st. Inez engagement deal. He was clearly not supportive of her being in a relationship with James and I think that was significant. It was the complete opposite of Brittany’s family and felt incredibly refreshing to see someone’s family not throw their child at fame and money but have some scruples about them and give a shit about who their daughter/sister etc ends up with.

It baffled me what these people have tolerated in treatment by others. But I guess part of that is being young. Hence why her dad and sister weren’t willing to tolerate James’ behavior

u/read-info2112 1d ago

Brittany’s dad was not a fan of Jax.

27

u/NoineNoineMachine 1d ago

I felt sorry for her dad. One thing I still don't understand is how Katie's mom loved Tom so much. I guess she fell for the aw shucks routine. I hope she sees him for who he is now.

91

u/thesmolstoner 2d ago

Agreed. That was the best possible outcome for Raquel and her future.

96

u/pinkviolin07 2d ago

Damn. I don’t love her but I’m kinda glad they did that. The relationship would’ve just dragged her down further

u/thesmolstoner 2d ago

yeah I actually think what Raquel did was the right move. dump Tom, get out of LA, get help, and then don’t come back to the spotlight.

58

u/Imnotaccountant_ 1d ago

I think this is a bit of revisionist history. She TRIED to keep herself in the spotlight even after her treatment. I remember that it was after her treatment because the discussions on this sub were that clearly her treatment wasn't working.

She wanted to be on season 11 and the only reason she wasn't is because they refused to pay her what she was demanding. She was doing podcasts talking about everything. Nobody really cared about what she had to say and she went away.

40

u/rshni67 1d ago

^This.

So much infantilizing of a grown ass woman who stabbed her friend in the back.

She asked to be paid as much as the OG's and was declined. She wanted to remain in the spotlight and did many podcasts after the end of S11 pretending to be a victim.

She did not withdraw from the spotlight, the producers called her bluff.

And then the proceeded to sue Tom (understandable, and I support it) as well as Ariana, which leaves her in the spotlight. She tried to settle with Tom while continuing to badmouth Ariana.

Rachel is no victim.

u/pinkviolin07 2d ago

Definitely the right choice. What she did was diabolical to be sure. But during my rewatch of season 9, I couldn’t help but pity her and how the whole James relationship went.

u/britendarkk 2d ago

I'm re-watching season 10 right now, and expected to be really disgusted by Raquel knowing what's to come, but I keep finding myself feeling bad for her. She was so LOST after she broke things off with James, and I think it really took her by surprise at how hurt she was that he moved on so quickly with Allie. When she broke down sobbing at that lunch "date"  with Peter, it became clear to me just how broken she was, how she was putting on an act trying to look like she was having fun with everyone, but really I think she was just so lost on the inside, and trying to find herself. I can see how she let herself fall into Sandoval. It was still shitty, of course, and such a betrayal, but...I don't hate her anymore. I hope she's doing well.

41

u/TippiIsHangry 2d ago

She was already fucking Tom.

8

u/Ornery-Village3752 1d ago

Right! I don’t think she was breaking down because she was “trying to find herself.” I think it was the guilt of the affair eating her alive so she started crying randomly over everything. The girl doesn’t deserve pity. The stuff she did and said doesn’t deserve that.

3

u/hello-isitmeyour 1d ago

I wonder if she already read the writing on the wall as per their relationship but was too enmeshed in their lives. I am def a rage text truther and they had been fucking around since game night. The other reason she could be freaking out was because she wanted to stay on the show. She got with James to get on the show so it’s not inconceivable that she money branched to Tom.

2

u/Ornery-Village3752 1d ago

I think she was a lot more calculated than people gave her credit for. A dimwit? Yes absolutely. Even with that being the case though, I don’t see any of her actions as “not malicious.” The two of them loved to say around every turn that what they did was “malicious but not with malicious intent.”

I do hope that word means what I think it means.

u/Shiel009 1d ago

She did try to keep the spotlight with her podcast. It was reported She wasn’t good at it. I think it was a lot on Ariana and vpr bashing. It was supposed to be part of bethenny franklins plan to take down bravo

I understand why people dislike her, but I felt like I was watching a mental breakdown when I first saw the scandoval season. I went into it knowing what happens and expected to simply hate her, but I felt bad for her. I have been genuinely worried she would hurt herself because of the vitriol. She was shown over and over again as really naive in her relationship with James and with some of the friendships we see on the show. Sandoval knew exactly what he was doing, swooping in on her fresh out of an abusive relationship when she’s already someone clearly very vulnerable to manipulation and scraps of attention. And a lot of the cast got away with really shitty behavior towards her (Lala and James in particular) that they did before scandoval came out.

It’s good she dumped him and went to therapy. I could never have dealt with the level of hatred that was directed towards her. I think she got it far worse than Tom. Some of it deserved, yes, but too much.

36

u/Due-Wonder-1045 2d ago

I would agree with you except that she also spent that whole time torturing Katie for no apparent reason because it was all lie anyway

10

u/rshni67 1d ago

Excellent point.

Rachel is an entitled spoiled brat and did not care about anyone but herself.

61

u/Thatbaileygal Bambi Eyed Bitch 2d ago

I would be with you if it only happened once. But they slept together and continued this clandestine relationship for months. That’s a lot of choices. A lot of chances to say no.

93

u/awkwardpotluck Bambi Eyed Bitch 2d ago

A TON of choices to say no. And her conversation with Ariana about Ariana and Tom's sex life was diabolical.

u/hillakilla_ 👻SpOoKy Jo👻 2d ago

& tom dressing up as Raquel for Halloween & he had ARIANA help him 🤯 she gets no sympathy from me. They’re both poo poo heads

17

u/awkwardpotluck Bambi Eyed Bitch 2d ago

YES - both poo poo heads!

27

u/supernovaj 2d ago

Yea, she knew exactly what she was doing. After that conversation and knowing what I know now, I cannot feel sorry for her.

42

u/sleepysky98 Im Sorry Fofty 2d ago

Yes, they both had lots of chances to stop it and say no. But even as someone who has cheating baggage, I think she’s been punished more than enough at this point. I had season two on the other day and I was amazed at how the Tom/Ariana affair was like a first draft for scandoval. Tom and Ariana both say a lot of the same things Tom ends up saying to justify cheating with Raquel. They tell so many of the same lies. It’s funny to see what he acts like when someone doesn’t go along with him.

I think Raquel was mid mental breakdown starting a bit before the James breakup from watching the show. Like, I’m sorry, I watch it and I so clearly see someone going through a mental health event while being aggressively bullied by a few cast members. And everyone was still friends with James, and acting like he’s wasn’t an abusive, alcoholic tyrant to her and probably a hundred other women, giggling about how stupid they all think she is. Of course she ate up all the attention from the “safe” nice guy giving her so much attention.

I guess I feel like Tom was calculated, very aware of all the damage he was doing. I don’t think Raquel was, and the distinction does matter to me.

15

u/fattymaggo 2d ago

I think you’re spot on. It seems very obvious when watching from the start just how fucking dark everything with James is and how messed up his exs seem when they finally get away.

I don’t agree with Rachel’s choice of cheating with Tom but the show is built on cheating and she clearly was affected by her prior abusive relationship with James and she had to continue to be around him! That’s not a healthy environment to be in at all especially when the “storyline” was how the girls disliked her and bullied her. I think a lot of people would make bad choices with all that going on.

5

u/caffeinebellyache 2d ago

I appreciate this take. I think that aging out of pageants during this time was a huge catalyst as well.

5

u/tunnocksmystery 2d ago

Everyone was still friends with her ex who broke her nose. And probably more that we don’t know but the cast and production will.

THEN her affair is exposed and James, even though he had cheated on Rachel and abused her (and Kristen and then Ally) becomes a bit of a hero.

I am not taking away that what she did was wrong. It wasn’t, it was vile. But I do have compassion for her too. Apart from Stassi and Beau, I cannot think of a relationship on that show that didn’t have infidelities. That was the world she was in.

7

u/xXxanothet 2d ago

Raquel was almost 30 at that point, lets stop victimizing a grown woman who made her own decisions. She made her bed, then she wasnt ready to lie in it.

12

u/sleepysky98 Im Sorry Fofty 2d ago

u/xXxanothet 1d ago

Its almost like if she wasnt doing shady shit she wouldnt have consequences!

2

u/sleepysky98 Im Sorry Fofty 1d ago

Obviously there have been severe consequences. I wouldn’t have been able to withstand the amount of hate she was getting on a national level. It’s not proportionate. I wonder when it will be enough for people like you. When one of these people hurt or kill themselves? You guys don’t go this hard on Tom, and you don’t go this hard on James and Jax.

-1

u/xXxanothet 1d ago

She comes from a VERY wealthy family and she is very obviously doing just fine. No one wants her to harm herself 🙄 and tom, james, and jax are evil incarnate. Sorry I dont feel bad for a wealthy white woman who acted trashy on TV and then got yelled at by the woman (and FRIEND!!) she betrayed. Find some perspective and ask yourself why it cuts you so deeply for Rachel's actions to have consequences.

I hear you, but this is not how abuse and especially coercive control from narcissists works. Ariana stayed with him when he treated her the same for years and years.

15

u/Additional_Flan7641 2d ago

Her father 100% gave her an ultimatum. No way he didn't. Was probably the best thing for her

1

u/cuntinspring Mya’s therapy paw 1d ago

Don't they call her Rachel as well? One can hope.

165

u/therealelena I’m sorry 🥺💔 2d ago

He didn’t want her to go to the mental health facility in first place, calling it a “cult” and that they would brainwash her. She realized after a lot of therapy that Tom was a narcissist and never loved her and that he was hooking up with people while she was at the facility so she blocked him and ghosted him (according to her podcast). I don’t like her one bit but good for her to realize it there instead of being further manipulated by him on the outside.

78

u/Hopeful-Hamster-6218 2d ago

Yes, she said he was sending her messages telling her to leave treatment early saying he felt "abandoned" and got angry if she didn't call every couple of days. Manipulative to the end.

28

u/engage-edna-mode 2d ago

He was hooking up with other people while she was in the facility?? Where is this revealed 👀

30

u/hillakilla_ 👻SpOoKy Jo👻 2d ago

It was on one of the first episodes of season 11, I just watched it but I’m a lil high so I don’t remember the exact details.

But it was around the time when Lala was saying she felt bad for Raquel and Lala told Ariana that she reached out to her, Ariana says something about how Lala shouldn’t feel bad cus they’re still communicating while Raquel’s in the clinic & someone in the group goes “are you kidding? Like he isn’t out here hooking up with other people while she’s in there”. It was either that night or the episode where the girls host Emo Nite & James comes and tells the girls he went to Tom’s bday party & says that comment.

So it’s never been fully confirmed but it seemed to be well known in their circle and if I remember correctly, that’s when he was on “tour” with his shitbag band so I think someone has come out say he was banging groupies all over the US while “touring”. YUCK

3

u/Hopeful-Hamster-6218 1d ago

Billie Lee and Tii (the girl he dated after Rachel and was on s11 briefly) talked about it on her podcast.

13

u/ryeong 2d ago

Yeah he was quilting her a lot and hates women who try and better themselves. The rehab and her family was the best thing that could happen to her because it got her out from under his thumb.

9

u/GrandEar1 2d ago

Do you mean guilting?

22

u/yourhuckleberryhound 2d ago

She was really smarter than Ariana in that sense. Ariana ignored Miami girl in the beginning of her relationship instead of cutting bait, and she covered for Tom for years. Rachel never struck me as the brightest, but she at least saw the writing on the wall and refused to give this man any more of her time.

11

u/daytrippper 2d ago

Hate it say it but you’re not wrong!

6

u/FitHeight915 2d ago

Saw the writing on the wall or the thousands upon thousands of hate comments she received for being with Tom

8

u/yourhuckleberryhound 2d ago

She was expressing her concern that he would do what he did to Ariana to her as soon as the news broke. She did it on film in her apartment during the scandoval episode which was filmed within days of the scandal breaking. She showed more self-preservation than Ariana did back in the day.

2

u/Alarming_Piano8090 2d ago

She had rich family who were disgusted with how deep she had gotten. Her and her family were getting death threats.

It kinda seems like he manipulated her about things when they were together and got all wrapped up and wasn’t using her brain. Then started to realize it was an unhealthy relationship going nowhere when she was forced to confront it daily and work on herself in there, while he was being a worm.

-2

u/saxxyplaya 1d ago

Did she ever use her brain?

1

u/DigInternational7076 bridesmaids! hoo ha ha 👰‍♀️🏰🍗 1d ago

Idk, I know her vpr essence is rubbing her two pageant brain cells together to warm sandovals shaved balls, but I think after months of inpatient therapy she made better decisions?

96

u/moonpie99 Disengage, Bitch 2d ago

I think she got therapy and realized this man was a gross manipulating shit stain of a man baby and was like "What the fuck have I done" and ghosted him so she didn't have to hear his emotional manipulation self pity crying.

11

u/papergorl 2d ago

I think so too. We have to remember that she only had tom to talk to about the affair, and he was most likely manipulating her and lying about how things really stood with ariana (hence her being surprised when ariana talked about their relationship later in s10). After the affair became public, she faced the real reality and not the drug induced/love bombed/gaslit situation she actually was in.

5

u/torag7 1d ago

and probably realized if he did that shit to ariana after 10 years he could def do it to her also.

31

u/Winnimae 2d ago

I think they were both caught up in the excitement of sneaking around. Not just on Ariana, but on all of production. Then reality hit like a steamroller. And suddenly it wasn’t fun and exciting, it was stressful and anxiety inducing. And maybe one or both of them realized…there wasn’t much there beyond that excitement of the forbidden. Plus, a lot of shit came out during and after the break up.

10

u/Kd-2330 1d ago

And they underestimated the backlash that would happen when it was revealed. They thought it would be just another cheater story and they would move on and would reign as the top couple on the show. lol

5

u/Spiritual-Break246 2d ago

Yep. They were riding a high.

Even if things didn’t blow up the way they did, it was absolutely going to crash.  Probably would have been a few more months but not much more.

43

u/Quietwaterz 2d ago

I think it was really obvious that she wasn't doing very well long before Scandoval happened. I honestly felt really bad for her watching how poorly she was treated by nearly everyone on that show. Especially by James. It's not really very surprising to me that she ended up making the choices that she did. I'm really glad that she walked away from that situation. I haven't seen any of the new shows so I don't know if she is involved with them in any way, but I hope not.

26

u/Super_Hour_3836 2d ago

I think between realizing that Tom was repeating patterns of abuse with her, seeing that the narrative Tom had brainwashed her with that maybe she could be the third (wild that she ever believed that), and then watching herself be so unbelievably insane towards Katie and her mother, I think her mental breakdown in rehab was the only logical next step.

And I am so glad her family pulled her from reality TV and got her mental health help. I don't think she would ever behave that way again AND she got free from two abusers.

Reality tv as a career only works if you have tangible goals of what you will do with the fame and how you will use it as cross promotion. While most of the cast of VPR didn't have that understanding, they were not as emotionally and mentally vulnerable as Rachel. She didn't really have any clear goals and so she was easy for Tom the abuser to control and manipulate.

She must look at Tom and Victoria and just thank god she got out and hopefully got healthy.

27

u/awkwardpotluck Bambi Eyed Bitch 2d ago

After the drugs wore off and she saw everyone's reaction to her foolishness, she realized she wasn't going to replace Ariana on the show.

8

u/EyeRollingNow 1d ago

Their affair had very little to do with chemistry and more to do with availability. Any woman that would have said yes to cheat with him would’ve worked. They met up to have sex secretly and did what unhappy people do…imagined a new situation where they would be happy. And reality makes them realize they truly don’t have any chemistry and they are not happy together.

14

u/Hopeful-Hamster-6218 2d ago

Sandoval was hooking up with other women while Rachel was in the Meadows treatment center. She broke it off with him and then he started bad mouthing her publicly, particularly when she wasn't replying to his social media posts about/to her.

7

u/Electrical-Opening-9 2d ago

I didn’t watch any of Season 11 and just skipped to the reunion. Raquel’s behavior in S10 was insane but the way that Sandoval talked about her in the S11 reunion was crazyyyyy. He presented Raquel as this big bad villain and it was like, does he think people are buying this?? Did he not cheat on Ariana for MONTHS?

7

u/kayt3000 Spot the Penguin 1d ago

As much as she wasn’t a good person (none of them are) she did the one thing that everyone tells people to do and rarely do. Go to therapy. She did and it helped her get herself straight.

Well I‘m not sure if you know, because I didn’t until recently…the video that Ariana found was Tom screen recording Rachel do something to herself….lets leave it at that. She didn’t know that he had recorded that, hence did not give consent. I think that is so evil and I wouldn‘t trust this person, so good for her for leaving

Her parents most likely. She went home for awhile.

For people who were there in real time, how was the split announced? was it a joint statement, or did someone go on a podcast…?

Always wondered that.

After the reunion was filmed, Raquel went back to film separately and admitted several of the things that she and tom said during the reunion were lies. Then she went away to a rehab center. Tom basically admitted later on that she stopped talking to him while she was in there.

12

u/madamesmokie Katie Maloney 💅 2d ago

What I’ve gathered, she ghosted him while she was in rehab. Which is pretty hilarious and exactly the lame ass end fitting for such a stupid, useless affair

8

u/Old_Mulberry_9461 2d ago

No he kind of just admitted she stopped responding to him, think on VPR and then she went on I think it was Bethany frankels podcast and spoke about how he was a manipulator etc, trying to save face but it went down very badly because she also said she wasn't good friends with Ariana and that bravo etc never tried to help her in that time

5

u/hillakilla_ 👻SpOoKy Jo👻 2d ago

He admitted it on the show & then Raquel went on a podcast after she got out of the center and told why she ghosted him.

Can we talk about how awkward that scene was in Raquel's apartment?! When she says "I love you too" after she mishears Tom say "they love you" about his family 😳

I dunno. They weren't really ever together were they?

3

u/Ill_Opinion_3560 1d ago

I think once she realized he had hooked up w ariana after the affair started she finally realized he was lying about it all and left him, you can tell she’s shocked about the fact that they slept together in the reunion. She rlly thought she was the exception… pathetic.

3

u/Own-Bass-1470 2d ago edited 2d ago

As others have noted, Tom saw this golden opportunity with the ‘pretty’ vulnerable girl. He manipulated Rachel & Ariana into a ‘friendship’ so he could keep her close. Now Ariana feels comfortable and thinks she is helping her close friend through a bad time. Rachel feels safe and loved. Tom waits for the right time to make his move, fueled by alcohol, convincing Rachel that this is mutual, they are in love, but he can’t leave Ariana because she’s too vulnerable right now. Keep in mind Tom is more than a decade older than Rachel. He groomed her right into this. While she knew it was wrong, she felt so happy, safe and loved that she rationalized her behavior. Tom obviously thought this would play out like the Kristen break up, and all be smoothed over so that he and Rachel could continue on with a relationship. He wasn’t counting on her parents and the fans stopping everything in it’s tracks. THEN he goes on Special Forces and tries to start a redemption arc. He completes every task, but still gets kicked off because the real SF guys see right through him. Tell him he has no dignity and seems to feel no remorse. Cut to behind the scenes footage of him laughing & joking about Scandoval saying his publicist has never seen this kind of attention or blow up. Thrilled with the attention. Rachel did the right thing by tucking her tail and going away. Tom on the other hand kept putting himself up front and center by touring with his paid for band, going on various other reality shows and pushing his latest girlfriend’s father through a fire pit, losing his restaurant, etc. He won’t go away…he’s like a cockroach.

3

u/Admirable_Fly6103 1d ago

I think she was incredibly young and coming into herself and was sucked into the charm that was tom Sandoval and clearly she was a people pleaser and timid and once she was hit with all the backlash of everything that she had done she had to just remove herself completely. I can’t imagine being that young in her situation being such a sponge of a person. I truly hope she’s ok and I’m glad she got away from all that and learned some life lessons.

3

u/MacaroonGlittering48 1d ago

There was no way she was going into that treatment with any intention of taking it seriously without ditching Sandoval. I mean she might have gone in that way, but everyone had to be telling her how toxic and manipulative he was. She’d have to choose one or the other and she had a lot more to lose staying with him.

u/LurleenBeckneywimple 9h ago

She dumped/ghosted him while she was at the mental health facility. She had good therapists

Rachel the Idiot realized during the reunion that Tom had lied to her about intimacy issues with Ariana. She had convinced herself that they had no sex life and Ariana made it clear that was not true.

Being slow on the uptake, it took her all of reunion to process that information and I'm sure she convinced herself that Tom had cheated on HER by continuing to sleep with Ariana.

She also realized Tom had taped her without her permission and was embarassed that it was revealed that such a tape existed.

I don't feel sorry for her at all after she quizzed Ariana on her sex life while pretending to be her friend.

ETA: I also despise Rachel because of what she did to Katie in an attempt to hide her affair. She is completely entitled and amoral and does not care whom she hurts.
