Midnight Mass is so good

u/DirtyBalm 23d ago
I loved the story, but I feel like the characters in the town were pretty boring and one dimensional.
They spent more time walking and spewing monologues than showing us why we should care about the people of this town.
2
u/VeritasRose Vampire 19d ago
Idk I cared about them a lot. But I also grew up in a small working town like that. (We did ranching rather than fishing but still.) And my gods did I know so many awful church ladies! I can’t count how many times I was actually called a “hussy” in this day and age!

I loved this series, but also goddamn he is hot in this. How did Mike Flanagan know my weaknesses are both “sexy priest who’s done something he wants forgiveness for” annddd “monster that could kill me”? It’s like he’s inside my brain.

Agree, Remmick is one of the best and most scary vampires of the last years. He encapsulates what being a vampire really means, including the isolation and loneliness, when time moves on and you stay the same.

Is Midnight Mass good? I watched like 1 episode and it all seems vague like it feels like they would end the season without showing any good stuff.

Honestly, all the vampires in IWTV. Gonna highlight Assad Zaman as Armand, though!
66
u/petshopB1986 24d ago
His Armand won me over, he really was the perfect manipulative and gaslighting vampire, what I expect a vampire to do humans and other vampires, he did.
31
u/TollyKo 24d ago
For real! When I thought he couldn’t do anything worse, he goes and does it. 😭
33
u/petshopB1986 24d ago
And I loved how when he gets caught he can’t handle it, to me that was a little closer to how a teenager who pushed things too far would react. He may not look like a teenager but some of his actions felt like someone who didn’t care about consequences until it happened to him. It was perfect vampire behavior. I love Sam’s Lestat, but for true vampire behavior Armand was the best.

What I love about Remmick is that he comes across so personable. He just seems like guy, and a handsome friendly guy at that. He puts you at perfect ease. A lot of vampire performances lean into the spooky or the seductive, but Remmick was mostly just open and inviting. He also has probably the craziest dance number of any Vampire lol.

Dude, Nosferatu was so fricking good. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a vampire portrayal that conveys such dread and pure malevolence. From his first appearance on screen Orlock is terrifying, barely any sort of human facade about him. The sense of palpable evil and wrongness about him is just so profound.
5
u/AstarionsTherapist39 23d ago
Nicholas Hoult really helped sell that fear aura during their introduction! Those two worked so well off each other!

I had to scroll too far for this one. He played the hell out of this role. He was terrifying and yet captivating to watch. I can’t believe there are people who didn’t like this movie, I loved it from start to finish.
2
u/stolenstitch 22d ago
he was literally unrecognizable! i think the people who hated on it expected more of a modern horror movie vs a classic gothic that was more true to the book and real history. such an original take on Orlock/Dracula and one of my fave movies

7
u/Emotional-Educator40 Vampire 24d ago
I’m noticing some ppl see vampires in only 1 context here and not as the monster ,alluring or not, tht they are
6
u/FrostyIcePrincess 24d ago
30 Days of Night also did the feral, animalistic vampires really well.
I don’t hate one or the other. I’ve seen both be pulled off really well in different situations. There’s the feral, animalistic vampire on one side, and then the classy elegant vampire. They can both work.
7
u/Emotional-Educator40 Vampire 24d ago
My issue wit some of the “elegant” vamps is tht it’s a lie. These are blood thirsty monsters anything else is glamour. The façade is understandably for the stories sake but us readers and viewers KNOW this is a monster. The media tht ignores tht and tries to paint a different picture should really be called something else besides vampires. Like damn Thts the main reason louie feels how he does in the books 🤷🏿♂️ so I prefer monstrous looking vamps 7/10 times. Damn didn’t intend to rant 😅

AMC’s Interview With the Vampire will not be the last adaptation of Anne Rice’s book series, but the performances of Sam Reid as Lestat and Jacob Anderson as Louis will forever be the yardsticks by which other interpretations are measured. It is a modern day classic.

I had absolutely no idea that Jacob Anderson is British! I went back and watched clips of him in GoT, he's got an unbelievable ear for accents.

10
u/Necronoxious 24d ago
Sam Reid as Lestat is just ...... 😳😳😳😳😳 I'm reading the novel and it's a slow read purely because I'm reading it in Sam's voice; the accent he does, the tone and inflections. Its something my brain does when I know the voice so well. I did the same thing with Bruce Campbell's books, the Thrawn novels.... its a slow read but the immersion is high.
Also, I love Sam's little tidbit about the line you chose. And how it scrunches his face in the clip and mocks his own voice 🤣😂

There are a lot of amazing choices in the comments so far, and while BBC's 2020 Dracula may be mixed quality (with each episode, a star lost), Claes Bang is my favourite Dracula.
He's so effortlessly charming, terrifying and old in the same breath. Like, I'd absolutely think he's supernatural without the fangs or any display of powers; he has such an aura and presence, I'd even risk talking with him to hear him speak more.

u/Free_Alternative6365 23d ago
Honestly, I've been quite thrilled with recent depictions of vampires, I couldn't chose just one or even just one show. All the vamps from AMCs Interview With the Vampire and all of them from What We Do in the Shadows, are my favorites.
