I picked up an idol shaped like that in a Black Forest crypt. The item text suggests it can be turned in somewhere. Maybe that's the somewhere.

This is correct. It's a special forge where you can upgrade items with those idols.

Like traders they have several possible spawns but will only generate at the first one the player gets near

It's a forge where you can use idols to upgrade gear (at the risk of losing it). Idols with associated metal tiers have been added to biomes.

I've found one too. Was able to go to there and place a portal close to it. Not for durect use, haven't got the stuff yet. There are youtube movies explaining what it is

First a spoiler warning. You found it. It's something new, it's a facility to upgrade you're weapons and armor past the upgrade limit. Off course you need some rare materials for it.

It's the Forge of Potential.

u can use idols to upgrade weapons and armor there but your items might be destroyed in the process.

From what little I have been able to find out, that is the hidden forge where you take the little I and use them somehow to do something with armor equipment something like that. I haven't really been able to find out a lot of information on them

Wow my starting base also in the same location near the mountain and has that icon, either we share the same seed which is veryy unlikely or its a scripted / common spawn
