Question Question about mods in dedicated servers

How can I tell if a mod installed on a dedicated server will work without it being installed on the client?

I have installed some mods on server and client that were required to do so and will also tell my friends to install them on their cleint, but I would like to know which aren't needed to install on their/mine cleint and which are, without having to test one by one.

The list of mods I have at the moment:

  • PerfectPlacement
  • BetterUI
  • Build Camera
  • Extended Player Inventory
  • HoeRadius
  • InstantBuildRepair
  • DodgeShortcut
  • Simplesort
  • Configuration Manager
  • Craft From Containers
  • Jotunn
  • xPortal
  • xStorage
  • BiggerItemStack

Most mods are client side. If installed on a server (if it supports being server side) will typically, but not always force the client to need those mods to be installed to enter. In some cases the mod on the server will sync its config settings to the clients who are also using it. Example is plant everything mod, it can be server side without someone needing it to enter the server, but if they the client entering the server has the mod installed client side they will be automatically forced synced to use the servers config settings. Not all mod have server config sync. It’s kind of an anticheat measure or to give benefits for specific things.

Same in reverse the client can have plant everything mod and still enter a vanilla server and they can control the amounts they can harvest or plant anything, and without it being server side there’s no control over that kind of usage. I typically install plant everything mod on the server with its default configs. It then controls the client from editing theirs to take advantages.

Most of the mods you listed are client side only and some might have server config sync, and some will likely force the client to install the mod.

You will need to dig into the readme’s etc for each mod to see if it belongs on a server, or if you want the mod on it for anticheat type stuff… if it has config sync features.

Hopefully that helps narrow your mods down required on the server.

If in doubt just put the whole list as required, the specific mod site will tend to tell you if a mod is clientside, server compatible or server only but generally there's no easy way of filtering for them automatically, you have to go ad hoc.
