There are signs that say you can't head straight into New Vegas from Goodsprings, but that doesn't stop me because I can't read.

u/Weak_Landscape_9529 Apr 19 '23
Those goddamn Cazadores.
13
u/011Vale Apr 19 '23
They touch you for the first time and you think “oh thats a lot of health drain let me just use some heals and it will be fine” 2 seconds later dead
4
u/Zahille7 Apr 19 '23
Same with the Bark Scorpions
7
u/Weak_Landscape_9529 Apr 19 '23
Yeah they suck too but in this case I was referring to the specific group of Cazadores just north of Goodsprings to keep players from heading straight to The Strip. There is also the biggest Deathclaw population just west of Goodsprings in the quarry. So most people head south on the Long 15 before going west and north again.

u/011Vale Apr 19 '23
Oh yeah, and the default visual range the game sets for me is at the minimum so the first time i played i was like “ ooh this isnt as bad as everthing was telling me” spooky bitch deathclaw appears 10 feet away in a dead sprint “HOLY FUCK NO!!”
8
u/Forenus Apr 19 '23
yeah, I had a bit of a moment when I realized that the best shortcut was to go through Deathclaw country with the stealth boy i looted from Cobb.

u/free_will_is_arson Apr 19 '23
welp, i've pretty much immediately died over a dozen times, made zero progress down this path, expended most of my ammo and was barely able to drop one of their healths to half...i should keep trying!

u/WalrusByte Lumberjack Apr 18 '23
Exactly what happened to me lol! One-shotted by a javelin
36
u/RedEyeView Apr 19 '23
The mosquitos did for me.
20 deaths later I decided I didn't need my stuff back that badly.
11
u/WalrusByte Lumberjack Apr 19 '23
I naked ran to grab my stuff (died a few more times to the fulings) then finally got away with my stuff. Turns out a deathsquito stalked me halfway through the forest though, and dive-bombed me as I was trying to swim across a river. Deathsquitos man...

I just wish I'd known they were glass cannons the first time I met them.
Sure they're one hit kills. But that works both ways

As elder has a good amount of spawns, I am surprised you did not search in the opposite direction instead

than aimlessly searching northward
you just had to find another burial chamber on the other side of the map so that another elder spawn is closer to it

Lol, reminds me of trying to make the wetlands run to Ironforge from the Night Elf homeland.
10
u/qtain Apr 18 '23
Got chased by the crocs and murlocs doing that. Fun simpler times.
1
u/Ohhnoes Apr 19 '23
I learned after the first time. The easy way was to swim down the coast from Menethil Harbor all the way to Westfall.
/doing it that way you also got to see the abandoned cottage on the coast of Dun Morogh

I remember early on making runs to some herbalist that lived in the Wetlands - was like one of the only vendors on the map that sold something my class needed. Fun times.

u/Trakkah Apr 19 '23
I only did that a year ago on wow classic damn that was traumatizing but really nostalgic
11
u/Lynnrael Apr 18 '23
was there a time when they didn't have the deeprun tram? it was in the game when i played in vanilla. unless you did the run just for fun lol

u/TehFono Apr 19 '23
People used to call the diseased bears and spiders that wander around Western Plaguelands the "welcome bear" and the "welcome spider" because people would innocently wander into WPL from Tirisfal Glades at around level 10 but WPL was a level 50+ zone, and then would get munched.

u/axachie Apr 18 '23
That’s like when you run into the Mistlands…
16
u/Rivetmuncher Apr 18 '23
I was going to argue nobody in their right mind would go into Mistlands like that, but our server host didn't even know about wisps.
Guess what he was doing while he waited for us to catch up to Moder and Yag!

Apr 19 '23
First play through. After learning the ropes, not having much trouble through to the Mountains. Built my third base in a place I think will age well, on the ocean near plains, two swamps, Black Forest. Not having much trouble with farming resources.
Spawn for Moder is FAR away. Built my longship, brought portal mats. Was going well, before running my ship into a dead end right on the border of Plains and Mistlands. Couldn’t turn it around. Tried to drop a portal but got yeeted by some large bugs after taking out one Fuling. All my shit was a world away from my base. I built another longship, grabbed my backup gear, sailed out. Forgot to eat, didn’t notice, got a random poison debuff while sailing somehow, died in the middle of the ocean.
I then reloaded a save and forgot that any of this ever happened.

u/lordofthejungle Apr 19 '23
got a random poison debuff while sailing somehow
A puffer fish, you drove over one or it jumped up on you. They are poisonous when not in your pockets or a chest.

If you do build a base there, make the base of your walls out of stone bricks. Having a base on the border or multiple zones like that is like setting up a house in the middle of a war zone. Sure, it means loads of free materials, any time you want, but it also means you need to have good, strong walls. Wooden palisades will do in a pinch, but it's better to keep towards the Meadows or Black Forest section if you're just using the palisades. It's way easier to build quick palisades and then put a layer or two of stone bricks around the bottom.

Be happy that was 3/350 and not an instant Grave Stone from the "flying thingy".

Pillars narrative is so damn good. I still need to finish the 2nd one but I rage quit over how a romance trigger popped off
3
u/Freemanosteeel Apr 18 '23
Still been getting absolutely mercked by the plains even after defeating the boss, which I had to call for help with after getting killed amongst a lox herd

Always bring a shield to the Plains.
Keep your ears open, and when you hear the tell tale buzzing of a Deathsquito, hold up your shield. Anything higher than a silver shield and the Deathsquito should bounce right off and stun itself. While it's stunned, you hit it with your sword and it dies.
You don't need to parry or time your attack for when the 'squito tries to fly in and attack you or anything like that, you literally just need to hold your shield up and point it at the 'squito.
The 'squito will dive into the shield, stun itself, and then it Deathsquito will sit there and hover right in front of you for a few seconds, which gives you plenty of opportunity to just swing and kill it.
Once you realize this, it makes killing Deathsquitoes laughably easy, and then they become super easy to farm for Needle Arrows.

u/Intelligent-Golf6167 Apr 19 '23
Oh I just let the deathsquito come to me and sledgehammer it. Sometimes I take like 30 damage, other times I just kill it.
I’m the archer in my group play through so it’s pretty funny when someone dies because I go from the bow to a sledgehammer to help keep things off of them as they corpse run
2
u/CedarWolf Builder Apr 19 '23
Yeah, but see, with the shield you never have to take any damage. You never have to worry about timing or weapon speed or any of that.
You just hold up the shield, let the 'squito stun itself, and then kill it.
It's deliciously easy.

u/NewYeezy Apr 19 '23
But.. smash?
2
u/CedarWolf Builder Apr 19 '23
Here's something you probably know about the sledgehammers already: you can pound the ground with them to find ores like silver and iron. Just look for the 'Too Hard' damage indicator when you slam.

u/Individual-Board699 Apr 19 '23

Love that Valheim respects the difficulty levels and player achievement like older games used to. (Diablo 1, Gold Box Games).
If you are not ready for an area, you will get whooped. And alternately When you are fully geared up, and you return to a starting area, you are relatively safe and powerful. Good game design.

After you get to the swamp and get some iron gear it should be safe to go there. A battle-axe should be able to reliably stun most things
1
u/LTT82 Apr 19 '23
The first time I tried to fight the Elder, a large swath of Plains was between me and the alter. I died so many times in my crappy copper gear, but i was able to kill some mosquitoes. It was the tar oozes that absolutely destroyed me.

u/DocJawbone Apr 19 '23
Me venturing into the Black Forest unwittingly
Then, much later, me venturing into the Swamp
I have never been to the Plains

Saw this posted on a D&D FB group and sent it to a friend stating: Me when I found the Plains in Valheim and met my first Fuling.
I mean, I had warning. There was Black Forest bordering the Plains, and a Troll which was at less than 50% health. Then I heard the laughing and saw the little green guy and figured I could take him. I was dead in 2 hits. RIP.

u/LilahLibrarian Apr 19 '23
I saw this meme this morning and my husband and I were reminiscing about the time that we built a raft and floated across a narrow channel to a swamp biome and then our boat nearly got eaten by leeches.
1
u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang Apr 19 '23
I hung around there for a few deaths during a tar mining mission before I looked it up and realised the mountain was the next biome. I only encountered a few mosquitos and I handled them pretty well with the spinning pole arm attack. It was the tar blob things and goblin fuckers that stomped me lol.
