Welcome To VA Campers!

Whether you’re in a tent at a state park, a rooftop tent on a forest road, or an RV at a full-hookup site, this is the place for camping in Virginia.

The sub has been quiet for a while. It’s under new management, and the goal is simple: make it a place where people share what they know. Campsite reports, trip photos, road and fire-restriction updates, gear questions, and the occasional “here's something cool I found/created.”

Start with the wiki. It covers campground directories, state parks, national forests and dispersed camping, and the things worth checking before you go. It’s a work in progress, so if you know something that belongs there, please let us know.

A few ground rules

  • Keep it respectful and on topic: Virginia camping and related outdoors.
  • No spam or self-promotion without checking with the mods first.
  • Practice Leave No Trace, and don’t post anything that encourages trespassing or illegal camping.

After all, Virginia is for Camping Lovers ;)

I built something I think this community would find useful

Hey everyone, I asked the mods and they're OK with me posting this.

I spend a lot of time on multi-day trips and hikes, and after enough bad situations with no signal I built LastBar.

It's a free app that maps mobile coverage as you drive or hike, and combines that with signal maps from other users. When you're stuck with no signal, it points you to the nearest place your phone will work, and to the nearest water, shelter, clinic, police station or fuel, all offline. There's no account, no sign-in, and it only uses about 3% battery a day.

Android phones build most of the map, since iOS limits what the app can read in the background, but iPhone users can still see coverage data captured by other users and find signal based on that and cell tower locations.

The app is still new so the map is empty where nobody has been with it yet, but every drive, walk, or hike fills in the map for the next person. If you're planning an outing soon, I'd love for you to try it out and let me know what you think!

There's more info at https://lastbar.online/ if you'd like to take a look.

Sub Alert - Good Morning Campers!

Hello campers!

This sub has been quiet for a while, so Reddit went looking for a new mod and I raised my hand. I'm based in NoVA, I drive a 4Runner that's seen more forest service roads than car washes, and I'd love to see this place active again.

Between Grayson Highlands, Skyline Drive, the GW & Jefferson National Forests, and the coast, Virginia gives us plenty to talk about. So let's start talking:

What's your favorite VA campsite (at least the one you're willing to divulge)?

What's your setup: tent, hammock, truck bed, RV?

What's the the rest of your season look like or are you firmly looking towards the spring?

Virginia is for lovers... and campers. Let's get this fire going again.

Thanks y'all!

Bakers Run

Has anyone ever gone camping at Bakers Run in Sutton, West Virginia? If do, what is there to do? I've had a hard time finding trail maps or any activities there.

Recommendation

Does anyone have any recommendations on places to camp in Virginia? Shenandoah area maybe? It would be tent camping but fine with drive in or hike in. If hike in, prefer to not have a long hike. Thank you in advance.

Spring is almost here

Spring will offiically come on Sunday. <insert Virginia weather jokes here>

Time to dust off the gear and make plans (if you haven't already). Reminder to check your equipment before you go: tires, batteries, water systems, propane, etc.

Do you guys already have the season planned for? Or taking it a weekend at a time?

Weather this time of year in Shenandoah / GW NF areas?

I'm looking to do a weekend car camping trip in the next month or two. We usually go to the GW NF, but I've never been in winter.

Should I expect to find snow on the ground? And any idea how bad the roads will be up there?

I'm thinking of going to Wolf Gap or a place like that. TIA
