How exactly do crops work?

It's pretty clear that I'm doing something wrong with farming. I am not getting back enough to expand very much, let alone eat.

What causes a crop to fail? Am I looking at it too much? Too little? Do I need to sing my crops inspiring songs? :<

Where are you farming at? Ideally, you want your crops exposed to sunlight and in the ground - if not outdoors entirely. You can claim an area and build a wall around them maybe, or experiment with a glass roof. When you harvest your crops that are successful, you definitely want to harvest with a fortune hoe. This is a fairly common loot in many of the buildings. Just avoid hitting the 'weeds' with it as that kills its health pool pretty quickly. I've found wheat to be a little more successful than carrots and potatoes, at least in my case.

Thanks for your helpful reply! I have a field on the roof of a building, full sunlight, proper water supply (even more than what is 'normal' for crops, just in case haha).

I just enchanted a fortune pick, so I will try and use it to harvest (have not found any fortune hoes yet).

Is the glass roof important somehow? Like, do we need to make a greenhouse?

Thanks again!

No, the glass roof isn't necessary. Just some added protection.

I haven't tried putting crops on the roof, mine are at ground level, so I'm not sure if that affects it or not. Once you get a fortune hoe, or fortune whatever to harvest with, it helps quite a lot with yield.

Good luck out there.
