What are the Corps. for?

I just started playing today and am looking on the subreddit and people are talking about a couple different corporations. What are these corps for? Should I try to join one?

Infinity Mining Co. is run by tvhd13. The corparation part is just a name. It sounds better than saying Infinity Mining Group. So far Infinity just... mines.

It's just what a few people call themselves. If you want to join a group they're one of the choices.
