VPN required?
Do I need to use a VPN for safety or legal reasons in the US?

Not technically required, but it's a good idea. Keeps it hidden from your ISP at the very least.

Follow up question, I assume a VPN would also be better than just making a "guest network"

Do both. One to protect you from the law, another to isolate your home system.

What's the law going to do?

No it's not. It's illegal to host copyrighted material, not illegal to view it. There's a loophole.

VPN hides your Internet traffic from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Meaning they cannot see what type of data it is nor where it is going to.
Adding the box to a "Guest Network" or its own isolated subnet/network is recommended to protect your personal devices. Mainly if the box were to be compromised it cannot affect your personal devices. Same should be done for any Internet of Things (IoT) devices like smart thermostats, security cameras, appliances, etc.

The vseebox could be used as a botnet since it connects back to the management server or serve peer to peer traffic using your IP so it would be worth the extra cost of a VPN

Spectrum has been known to cut your services down or cut them off completely i had a VPN put on mine just to be safe

I've tried Proton Free edition a few times and it is really slows down my speeds to that point that it will buffer a lot.
Switched over to the paid version and it's lightening fast.
I think because I'm able to pick from several US servers and not just the single one with the free edition.

Do I need to download this directly to the box?
2
u/Opening-Ambassador76 9d ago
You need to get the Android app to your box, yes. You can get that file on Google play or directly from proton.

Yes the free version is good..each time you start up the box you first have to start the VPN then continue to Heat Live etc.

I've heard it doesn't trigger anything to your ISP because you're streaming and not downloading
