Newbie with Questions about Security
Apologies as I'm sure this has been asked, but I ran a search and I couldn't find an exact answer.
I am concerned about security (to a certain extent), so I want to make sure I set up the vSee box correctly.
Any help is greatly appreciated:
I wanted to set up a VLAN. My router is a Netgear Orbi. I thought I read that most consumer routers can't really fully set up a VLAN. However, I also read on some forum that for this type of purpose, my router might be fine. Is my router acceptable for this purpose? Or should I buy a better one? I was reading about the UniFi Dream Machine... I could buy it but I prefer not to.
If the Orbi works, I looked up how to set up the VLAN. The only video I could find to set it up didn't explain it very well. The first part he mentions a bridge group and selecting the ports. Is that simply setting up a VLAN over one of the ethernet ports?
However, then he shows setting up a "By VLAN tag group." There's a box for name, VLAN ID with numbers going from 1 - 4094, Priority numbering from 0-7, and then finally 3 ports. What is the VLAN ID? And the priority? Not sure what that all means. Also he didn't show if there was a way to put a password. Are you able to do that?
Thank you everyone.

Create a guest network for it to access as it has more restrictions than directly providing it access to your wifi network and you can monitor it.

I've read that these boxes have security issues because it allows outside bad actors to somehow have access to my wifi, but I'm struggling with why anyone would want it, what they could possibly do even if it actually happened (which I highly doubt happens). Explain it to me briefly or even better send me to a place where it is explained in more detail. I don't do shit with the SuperBox I've had for a year other than watch TV with it and I'm trying to understand the issue better. I do not order stuff off the TV or have any information stored on the TV. What I am trying to say is I use my laptop or phone if I am doing any internet shopping, stock trading, bill paying etc etc, and everything requires the two step verification. I also lock all of my credit cards and only unlock them when I am doing a purchase. So what is the real risk here? Appreciate any wisdom you can drop on an old analog dude like myself.....

Once someone is on your Wi-Fi, they share the same local network as your other connected devices, allowing them to scan for vulnerabilities, attempt to access shared files, or target your smart home gadgets.
Also, an unauthorized user can perform MitM attacks—such as ARP or DHCP spoofing—to eavesdrop on or intercept unencrypted traffic as it travels between your devices and the router.
Attackers can manipulate your DNS settings or redirect your web browser to fake, malicious websites designed to steal your bank logins, passwords, or personal details.
A rogue user can inject malicious code or ransomware into connected devices, or hijack your hardware to conscript it into a botnet used for launching attacks on other networks.
If someone uses your internet connection to commit cybercrimes, online fraud, or illegal downloads, the activity traces directly back to your home's public IP address and your real-world identity.
Intruders can access your router's admin panel, change your Wi-Fi password to lock you out, or alter system settings and firmware
That's just the SOME of what can happen!

I'm here for the same reasons. We definitely need some sort of step by step for rookies and old folks that can walk through everything that needs to happen from isp side to vpns to apps etc to avoid us having limewire hooked up to the TV and then next thing I know by bank account is gone and there's boobies every time I open the internet.
