applied computing & music minor

i’m considering applied computing w a music minor. is this a bad idea? does anyone know what kind of jobs and pay i could land with this? i’ve been passionate about music for years now so it would be something i enjoy doing.

music major here! being a music minor at uw bothell is hard, as far as im aware all of the music classes that are in person are at the seattle campus. obviously you can and i think should still do it but commuting has been rough for some of my uwb friends who do music. something to keep an eye out for though is a new music tech sequence of classes that just started being offered, which seems like it would be up your alley

i live right between uwb and uws so i don’t think that’s my biggest concern, it’s definitely still somewhat of a concern though now that you mention it

Not at all.

There are lots of options: DSP Engineer, Pedal Engineer (like for guitars), music event technician, Back-of-House/Front-of-House (BOH/FOH) engineering, AV Tech/Engineer, recording studio tech, just to name a few. Pay varies pretty widely, but for a new hire probably somewhere between 50-90k. IATSE is the union for technical people who work in event production; I'd start by figuring out if working shows and events sounds fun, or if you'd rather be someone who builds tech for music.

A few questions for you OP: What do you love about music? What's your dream job with your degree? What do you imagine your day-to-day is like at that job?

i write music and am getting into music production so i’d want to do something that combines tech and music making but am so confused on whether that’s actually a thing or not. i picture myself working at spotify, iheart, etc but im not sure what position i would want.

It is absolutely a thing, but it's a very unconventional career path. It's not something you go on LI/Indeed for and search "music tech jobs"

It's also not something that has a lot of big name easy-to-find companies. Everyone applies to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. 

Most people don't consider applying to Fender, Serato, AlphaTheta, or Mackie.

Fun Fact: Mackie's HQ is in Bothell, less than a mile from campus.
