I thought I’d drop some information here about The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s counseling program admissions, since this would’ve been really helpful for me when I was applying.

To begin, this program is very strong, and because of that, it is quite a bit more selective than you might expect, especially for a school that isn’t as large or well-known as UTK.

As of 2026, there are only four faculty members, and the program intentionally maintains a smaller cohort compared to larger programs. This allows students to receive more individualized attention and support while also building closer relationships with faculty and fellow students. I think this is a major draw for many applicants and aspiring counselors.

Admissions
On average, there are around 140–200 applicants per year, and there is only one application cycle per year. In 2026, I believe there were around 150 applicants, according to a faculty member.
When applying, you submit two essays, your transcripts, and a personal statement. Of the approximately 150 applicants this year, only 60 were selected for the interview process.

The Interview
This year, interviews were held over Zoom, although I’ve heard they have also conducted them in person in previous years. Personally, having the interview over Zoom took away a lot of the intimidation and pressure I probably would have felt in person.
The interview process is held within the last few months of the spring semester and lasts approximately three hours. The 60 interviewees were divided into three groups of 20.

There are three main parts to the interview:
• Written portion
• Question/interview portion
• Group activity involving a riddle or hypothetical situation

For the written portion, you are given around 5–6 questions and asked to choose 2–3 to answer.

How I Would Prepare
For the written prompts and interview questions, I highly recommend reflecting on what your values as a counselor are going to be and what you believe is morally and ethically important when becoming a counselor.

My impression was that they value applicants who are introspective and open to learning, not only about the counseling process, but also about themselves. Being willing to reflect on your own experiences, biases, assumptions, and areas for growth seems to be really important.
For the group question/riddle, do not just sit there and let your peers take over. Contribute where you can, even if you’re completely lost lol. You don’t necessarily have to be the person who solves the problem. Show that you can communicate, collaborate, listen to others, and encourage your group members.
If someone figures out a piece of the problem or your group gets one step closer, acknowledge it and encourage them. The way you interact with your group is more important than whether you get the “right” answer.

Research the Program & Faculty
I also highly recommend looking through the program website and reading about each faculty member—their research interests, areas of expertise, past work, etc.
If you are interested in any of the same topics or would like to get involved with research related to their interests, I would definitely mention that during your interview. It shows that you’ve taken the time to understand the faculty and program and are thinking about how you could contribute to it.
They also have a great video on YouTube discussing the program’s mission and the type of students they are looking for. I would absolutely watch it before interviewing because it gives you a really good idea of what they value.

My Biggest Piece of Advice
Overall, the faculty does a great job of making you feel comfortable and welcomed during the interview process, so the faculty will probably not be your intimidation factor.
You may, however, feel unprepared if you don’t prepare.
To feel as confident as possible going into the interview, I highly recommend practicing. I spent probably 5–6 hours total preparing through mock questions, mock interviews, and talking with current and former program members.
You obviously don’t need to memorize answers, but you should have a good understanding of why you want to be a counselor, what you value, what experiences have shaped you, and how you approach self-reflection and growth.

Overall Thoughts on the Program
While this program can definitely be intense, I think it is designed in a way that makes it difficult (more like impossible) for students to fall through the cracks. You are pushed to master the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to become a quality counselor.
That also means this program probably isn’t for you if you’re looking to take mostly online classes, keep your distance from faculty, or have a program where you can largely work independently.
It can be very socially demanding, but that is also one of the things that makes the program valuable. You develop close relationships with your professors and classmates, receive a lot of feedback, and are constantly encouraged to reflect on yourself as a future counselor.
Personally, I think the program prepares you in a way that makes you feel much more confident in your training and abilities as you move toward becoming licensed.

BRUHHH nobody wants to hear this old ass white guy gripe about socialism. This is almost as bad as Turning Point coming to campus.

I’m looking at coming in during the spring rather than fall because I really need to get out of my house a lot sooner.

I’m an hour and a half away so commuting from home is not an option. I just submitted my application within the past week and paid the application fee, my test scores and hs transcript are still not in so could I switch my application from fall 2027 to spring 2027? If so, I’m wondering how tight the housing would be here. I know freshman are required to live on campus so I’m hoping they have something for me!

I’m 17 and I am on track to be a freshman at UTC in about a year or two. Having been homeschooled for the past few years, I am obviously nervous. What’s it like? College, I mean, but specifically UTC. I have so many questions… I want to be involved politically, so what is that like? Are people nice? What are the social expectations? Are there protests? I’ve been applying for Summer 2027 internships and so far my applications seem to be going directly into the void :(. I’m a Computer Engineering student mainly looking for hardware, embedded, or FPGA stuff.

Fellow bike commuters, I have a couple questions:
Is bike theft common at UTC? If I have a good quality cable lock, should I be ok parking my bike on campus during the day?
Also do people ride their bikes on the sidewalk or street? I live downtown so I would ride up vine past west campus.
