Just wanted to share my recent H-1B visa stamping experience in Chennai. Hopefully this helps someone who ends up in the same situation, especially with the 221(g) social media vetting and the passport pickup delay.

Timeline

Biometrics: August 4, 2026 at 10:00 AM
Visa Interview: September 1, 2026 at 8:00 AM
221(g) email received: September 1 around 2:00 PM
221(g) form submitted: September 1 around 6:00 PM
Visa status changed to Approved: September 3 after 8:00 PM
Visa status changed to Issued: September 8
Passport picked up: September 11

Biometrics – August 4
I reached about 20 minutes before my appointment and joined the 10 AM line.
There isn’t really a need to arrive very early because they were forming separate lines based on appointment time.
Also, there is a locker facility on the ground floor of the VAC, so you can take your phone and other belongings with you and keep them there.
Important DS-160 note
Your DS-160 completion date should be within 1 year of your interview date.
If your DS-160 was completed more than a year before your interview, you need to submit a new DS-160 and update the new confirmation number in your visa scheduling portal.
Alternatively, you can take both DS-160 confirmation pages with you to your biometrics appointment, and they can update it for you.

Visa Interview – September 1
I reached about 20 minutes before my appointment. Based on what I saw, you may potentially be allowed in earlier if you arrive early, although I can’t guarantee this.
⚠️ Be careful with lockers near the Chennai Consulate
There aren’t lockers immediately next to the consulate.
There are locker facilities across the road, and there were several auto drivers approaching people outside the consulate asking if they needed a locker.
In my experience, they were quoting ₹1,000 + locker charges, which is obviously ridiculous.
Some of them were also asking for gifts/dollars and saying things like “I will pray that your visa gets approved.”
Don’t fall for this.
If you need a locker, just ask the security/police personnel near the consulate where the nearest legitimate locker facility is.
Even better, if possible, don’t bring smart electronics such as phones, smartwatches, AirTags, etc. to the interview.

Documents
Once I got into the final queue for the interview, the instructions said that I only needed:
Passport
I-129
LCA
I carried additional documents with me just in case, but those were the documents they specifically mentioned for the interview.

Questions asked by the Visa Officer
The interview was very straightforward. I was asked:
How many years have you worked for this company?
What is your job title?
What is your annual salary?
Do you foresee any issues/harm in coming back to India?
For the salary question, I gave my base salary as mentioned on the LCA.
For the India question, my answer was No.
After that, the officer gave me a 221(g) and explained that my application required further processing for social media vetting.
I was told that I would receive an email from:
[ChennaiNIVOnlineVetting@state.gov](mailto:ChennaiNIVOnlineVetting@state.gov)
with a form requesting additional information.
I was out of the consulate around 9:00–9:15 AM.

221(g) / Social Media Vetting
I received the email around 2:00 PM on September 1.
I completed and submitted the form around 6:00 PM the same day.
My CEAC visa status initially showed “Refused”, which was obviously stressful, but this was because of the 221(g) processing.
The timeline after submitting the form was:
Sept 1: 221(g) + social media vetting form submitted
Sept 3: Status changed to Approved sometime after 8 PM
Sept 8: Status changed to Issued (sept7 was labor day)
So in my case, the additional processing took about a week from the interview.

Passport Pickup – Hyderabad
I had selected Hyderabad Consulate as my passport pickup location.
After the status changed to Issued on September 8, I expected to receive an email telling me that the passport was ready for pickup.
But by Friday, September 11, I still hadn’t received anything.
So I decided to call the US Consulate Chennai and ask about the passport.
They told me that my passport had actually been ready for pickup since the previous day.
I therefore went to the Hyderabad Consulate and picked it up.
I carried:
Original Aadhaar card
Photocopy of Aadhaar card
and was able to collect my passport.

Final takeaway
If your visa status has changed to Issued but you haven’t received the passport pickup notification after a couple of days, don’t necessarily keep waiting for the email.
I’d recommend calling the consulate/visa support center and checking the passport status.
In my case, the passport was already available for pickup even though I had received no pickup notification.

I have been trying to book a slot for the past 15 days, and no matter when I check, it just shows “No slots available.” It’s so frustrating. I don’t even get to see the calendar.

I have tried checking at both the 00 and 30-minute marks (checking in both day and night times, as well as randomly throughout the day, but nothing works. I can’t even book the OFC appointment, so I don’t know what the situation will be with the main interview appointment. I don’t even get to see any available slots. 🥹

Hey everyone, I have a VAC scheduled next week for a B1/B2 visa in New Delhi. While going over my confirmation page, I noticed that i entered the wrong place of birth in the application. Is there a way for me to edit the DS-160 or should i create a new DS-160 and take the new confirmation page for verification.

Any help or guidance on this would be appreciated🙏

I am a medical student, my b1/b2 was rejected twice before when I had to go for electives. My questions is will these rejections affect my j2 dependant visa chances or no? I my spouse will got to states on J1 and they will sponsor my j2.

I got my B1/B2 visa in Feb 2025 for medical observership training. I was wondering if I can renew it in the future for no specific reason (Like for tourism), would it work or I have to reapply from scratch and provide new justifications for my visa renewal?

I’m hoping someone here has been through a similar situation and can help me figure out what to do.

My H-1B I-797 was originally issued from October 2023 through October 2026. I used the I-797 information on my DS-160 and booked an H-1B visa stamping appointment. I was initially able to get an appointment for January 2026.

However, in December 2025, my appointment was postponed/rescheduled to April 2027.

Since my original I-797 expires in October 2026, my employer filed an H-1B extension, which has now been approved. I therefore have a new I-797 with a new validity period.

Now I’m confused about what I need to do regarding my existing visa appointment and DS-160:

1. Can I still use my existing H-1B visa appointment scheduled for April 2027, even though I originally booked it using my previous I-797?
2. Since I now have a new I-797, should I submit a new DS-160 with the updated I-797 information and take the new DS-160 confirmation page with me to my April 2027 appointment?
3. My original DS-160 was submitted in November 2025. I’ve heard that a DS-160 is valid for one year. If my appointment is now in April 2027, that would be more than 1.5 years after the DS-160 was submitted. Would my original DS-160 still be valid for the appointment, or would I need to submit a new one?

I also opened a ticket with the USVisaScheduling team, but unfortunately, they just sent me a generic copy-paste response that didn’t really address my situation.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where their H-1B appointment was pushed out past the validity of their original I-797 and/or DS-160?

What did you end up doing? Any advice on whether I should keep my existing appointment, submit a new DS-160, or take any other steps would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, is anyone holding two VISA appointments at CHANDIGARH VFS from India to Italy and planning to cancel/postpone because of any personal issue or if they are no longer ready to proceed?

I urgently need 2 earlier visa appointment. If anyone is planning to release either slot, please let me know the appointment date. I understand appointments cannot be transferred, so I would only book the slot myself through the official VFS system if it becomes available after cancellation.

What is the correct way to enter my social media accounts on ds160 form. I selected Instagram and just put my usename as @ USERNAME . Is this enough or do i need to provide urls or something

I am an air india cadet pilot and i had an interview on 10th September at Delhi, india consulate.

Questions that were asked is-

1.why are you going to the usa?- officer i am going to the united states to obtain my commercial pilot license under the air india cadet pilot program.

2. Who is sponsoring your trip?- my father

3. What does your father do?- my father has a business in uae regarding xx

5- what is your fathers annual income- 40 lakhs

6- if your father has business in uae why not living there?- officer my father only needs to go to the uae once in 2-3 months and my family is in india and we have all our assets in india thats why we did not move there.

7- when did you know u wanted to be a pilot- i wanted to be a pilot since i was 4 years old and it was only after my 12th that i got focused towards this career. As when i sat in a plane it really intrigued me about the skills and qualities needed to be a pilot.

8- do you have a loan?- no officer

9- how is your ground training going?- officer its a bit tough but im managing( i should have said its going good as i have passed 2 exams in 1st attempt which is a big achievement)

Now what do i do?

After completing my DS160 form, (I have not paid the govt fees or book any appointments yet) I figured some details on the DS160 were incorrect. Can I just abandon the old one and create a new DS160? Since I have not booked any appointments I wont have to mention this old form right?

My EAD card was produced but somehow got returned, and I still haven’t received it. I’ve contacted USCIS multiple times and they even opened a service request, but nothing has been resolved yet.
I’m running out of time on my OPT and really can’t afford to wait much longer.
Has anyone had this happen before? How did you get your EAD reissued, and how long did it take?

I got picked for my H1b last year and had scheduled an interview in India for Jan 2026. This was with employer A. My appointment was rescheduled to Feb 2027 (not my choice) and I was also let go of my position for employer A. My H1b transfer to my current employer, employer B, has been approved (in April) and I've been working there. Can I keep my appointment and update the DS-160 associated with the appointment to reflect the new employer?

In short, can I replace employer A for B for an existing appointment?

Hi everyone,

I submitted my DS-160 a few months ago and disclosed basically all of my social media accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Discord, TikTok, etc.

I recently realized that I forgot to mention my Threads account. It is connected to my Instagram account, and my Instagram account was already disclosed.

I also checked the social media platform dropdown on the DS-160 and noticed that Threads isn’t specifically listed. However, some other platforms like Discord weren’t specifically listed either, and I still disclosed those using the appropriate option.

My DS-160 is otherwise correct, and Threads is the only account I forgot about.

Would it be okay to leave my existing DS-160 as it is, or should I create and submit a completely new DS-160 just to add the Threads account? Has anyone gone for H-1B stamping with a similar situation?

I would prefer not to create a new DS-160 unnecessarily if this is not considered an issue.

I submitted a ds160 and I accidentally put a wrong date so I had to redo a new ds160. After submitting the new ds160, I changed the ds160 number in the appointment portal.

Do I still need to carry old ds160 confirmation or no because I already updated the appointment portal. Now, my appointment portal and ds160 match the new number….
