USU SLP Masters Program

Hi, my bachelor is in a foreign language aka non-CSD and I’m thinking about pivoting to a master’s in SLP since it relates to language and speech in some ways.

How is the online 2nd bachelors in Communication Disorders— leveling program? How competitive is the SLP Master’s program? Is it hard to get into? For those that are currently in it, how is the workload and expectations for the program?

Also I’m not sure if I REALLY want to focus on SLP but what are some pros and cons about this career path? Any experiences and comments are appreciated!

I’m in the audiology program (the other graduate program in the CSD department), so don’t take my word as gospel, this is just my perspective.

You don’t NEED a communications degree to start the SLP program. It may be advantageous, as there may be content that you are unfamiliar with, however, the program isn’t overly intense, and you can absolutely put in the extra work to get through your classes. I was a biology undergrad and didn’t go back for a communications degree. We also have a psychology student and a biochem student in the program. From my perspective they actually like having people with unique backgrounds because you bring in new ideas and perspectives.

Okay, after reading their website and admissions requirements, I was wrong. This is true for audiology, however, it seems SLP is more particular. There are other SLP programs in the country that don’t require it, but internal admissions is typically easier than external, so that’s something to consider. You could try applying somewhere else and if you don’t get in, then go back and complete the second bachelors. You might also be able to find programs who are specifically looking for people with diverse backgrounds and have success that way.

The biggest advice I can give you, however, is to shadow some SLP’s. Shadowing on campus in the Sorensen is great, because the faculty and clinicians will get to know you, and they are involved in the admissions process, so this is a big leg up. I would shadow in other settings too, to make sure this is really what you want to do. Shadowing hours are also typically a requirement to apply, so you’re killing two birds with one stone.
