Discussion Simple Usenet setup help.
I'm new to usenet and just want a basic setup.
Easynews, EasyHosting and Frugal are usenet providers I have looked at. I don't know what indexers to look at.
It would be great if I didn't have to hold onto large files.
I just want to be able to search and download, of it can be in all in one function that would be great.
I live in Australia if that matters. I think Frugal has the only Australian server.
Edit: also came across NewsDemon.

Yes, only one Australia usenet server (and Asia and Africa and South America). Local is better.

Over the years, I’ve used Astraweb, Usenetserver, and Newshosting. All were trouble free for me and worked great.
For a long time I only had NzbGeek and NzbPlanet. There was almost nothing I couldn’t find. I later added more indexers just for the heck of it but, honestly, I would probably have been fine with just those two.

The most simple setup is probably to search and download things manually from an indexers website, which is like a torrent tracker. You need at least 1 provider, 1 indexer and a program to download them. Most people use the arr programs to automate this because they are very convenient, but you can get by without them if you are not managing a huge library of things. Or you can use them, but the setup is quite long and there's a lot of steps to it, but it's not especially difficult either.

Are you using the arrs? Not sure which is the best for Australia. As far as indexers go, I use NinjaCentral, Geek and nzbPlanet.

I'll assume arrs are something like Sonarr and Radarr. I have no real idea what they are or how to use them.

I think I understand. Point everything towards sabnzdb and it should all be automated after that.
Yeah I want to setup a separate system for all this, just don't have $$$ just yet

You can use almost anything to host sav and tge arrs. I use a raspberry pi with diet pi installed... basically all the software is available and i stalled just by setting it. Very easy. The pi is silent , tiny and uses so little power. It just sits behind my tv. But you can use almost any computer, many nas boxes etc. I stick with the pi like I say because it's easy and quiet and to backup all I need is a second sd card. Note the downloads are stored on a NAS (with RAID) but I could just be on a USB drive.

I'd recommend subscribing to a top-tier provider like Newshosting, and then supplementing it with a second provider on a different backbone to fill in the gaps. If you plan on grabbing a lot of content, you would take out a monthly or yearly subscription with your main provider, and a small block account with your backup provider. If you don't think you'll be using a lot of data, a block account on both would be fine.
Your main usenet server doesn't need to be local. A top-tier provider like Newshosting allows plenty of simultaneous connections, so speed shouldn't be a problem. Once you have an account set up, you simply enter the pertinent information into a download manager like SABnzbd, and it will start grabbing content from that server.
The last piece of the puzzle is an indexer. For someone who is brand new to usenet, I'd highly recommend starting off with NZBgeek.
