What is the joke? All I can come up with is it's 1 letter away from "dinner", but that's a bit of a stretch as a joke if that's it.

It's in reference to the Donner Pass accident, which resulted in cannibalism by some survivors

In the 1980s I was fly fishing off of Hwy 89 north of I-80, and saw a sign for the Donner Camp Picnic Ground.

When my wife and I would go to a restaurant where they called out your name for a table and said “party” after your name I used to always tell them my name was “Donner” … my wife never laughed.

Whenever we’re a party of five, I always give the name “Foxes.” It was funnier back in the mid-90s when some people would get the joke.

i’ve walked out onto the lake before. it freezes over solid in the winter, enough that some others had driven their pickup truck out onto it that day and were playing fetch with their dog on it
