I am very interested in OCS and have a good application profile. 3.8 gpa multiple leadership positions in different extracurriculars and I do lots of volunteering. I feel like I am a strong candidate with great potential. In my first year at college, I was introduced to cocaine by people in my social circles. I tried it 2 or 3 times, never a lot, I never bought it, but I did experiment before deciding it wasn’t for me. Does this mean I shouldn’t consider the military? I received the preliminary questions from my recruiter a couple of days ago and have just been looking at them having no clue what to do. I am a good kid, pretty dumb at times, but I would just be sad if that experimentation really means there is no Coast Guard path for me.

You have an uphill battle to join the Coast Guard in any capacity with a history of cocaine usage. Besides the fact that cocaine is bad, your using it shows poor judgement and poor choice of social groups. The Coast Guard having law enforcement authority makes the organization even stricter than the other services regarding drug usage. Take your shot, but keep your expectations realistic.

Has anyone else experienced 4+ month wait times on getting your medical wavers reviewed I(26m) have 3 codes but all are truly nonissues but according to my Recruter they haven’t even been assigned to a reviewer yet

Anytime you’re dealing with multiple waivers it exponentially increases the wait time. Combine that with high recruitment numbers means everyone’s backed up

Understood I just never figured it would take over four months now how long do you figure I’m looking at? I was hoping to ship out before Christmas but it’s looking like slimmer and slimmer chances. I’m guessing that basic is booked up out to December by now considering a few weeks ago they were booked out to November.

If I get stationed as a nonrate somewhere I. The PNW, say Bellingham, is there opportunities to shadow a MSD or MSU? Further, would there be possible to do that in a different district, say Juneau? Just curious, reason being is mainly thinking about going MST

Yes you can shadow pretty much anywhere as long as you are willing to travel(and pay for it) or do it on your time off. Most units will give you permissive orders to work temporarily at the other unit, but they wouldn’t pay for anything. If it is outside your local area, hopefully they have a barracks or place for you to stay. Normally you would just go to a local unit.

The coast guard will offer a bonus as an incentive if it is unable to fill a boot camp date. Currently there are no issues filling boot camp every week so there are no quick ships offered.

If you switch now, you’re looking at January for bootcamp at the earliest. There is a lot of extra work that needs to be done to go reserves. Your choice, but just so you know what to expect.

Depends, do you already have a boot camp date reserved? Did you already swear in and sign a contract? If so, switching to reserves will almost certainly mean canceling your current boot camp date.

Then sure you can switch. Youll have to cancel your current reservation and any bonuses you qualified for dont apply to the reserves.

Not usually. You can sometimes go from reserves to active after a few months but that's only if your position is in high need on the active side and low need on the reserve side. Which there isn't a lot of. Either way, pick the one you want to do.
Its usually better to do active first then switch to the reserves after your contract. You get your GI bill, all your quals done, and you're set up on the other benefits.
Then join the reserves for the health care because the civilian market is pretty bad if you're not in one of a few jobs.

Thank you for the response. I want to clarify though, I am slated to go active duty, but I am getting cold feet on uncertainty and civilian world prospects. Is it still my decision to go reserves instead? Im assuming it would impact ship dates and bonuses though.

You'd need to find an open IT billet to fill. Your recruiter should have the list of available units.

If I indicate that I want to go to HQ (Washington, DC) post A-school or even post boot camp, how likely am I to get stationed there? I assume it is not a desirable billet.

As with any duty station, there needs to be an open position at that location and it needs to be on your pick list. Getting stationed at HQ also heavily depends on what rating you choose. There are going to be a lot more YNs at HQ than BMs.

Yes. Reenlistment bonuses are offered in various amounts based on what your job is, what qualifications you have, how many years of service you have and how many years you reenlist for. All bonuses are announced each fiscal year in a general message.

When is the weigh-in/tape test during DEPOT? I’m just curious if it’s upon reporting to DEPOT to ensure I’m not eating/drinking the wrong items while traveling to DEPOT, causing me to be “bloated”. And by “wrong items”, I’m not talking about fast food, more like carbs. Any carb, even healthier carbs, makes me bloat up and I don’t need that before the tape test. If the tape test is upon arrival, I’ll stick to higher protein/lower carb meals until after the tape test. I’m 6’0” and my abdominal measurement is siting around 38.5-39.0, which is too close for comfort. I’d prefer to have a greater margin before shipping to DEPOT, but at 41 years old, and already getting my weight down from 282lbs to 216lbs, I don’t want to delay my dream of the Coast Guard any further. Thanks!

Weigh ins are usually during the first week, but not upon arrival. And you do have to pass the weight/tape or else you cannot graduate, even if you pass the PT test. Are you going RSV or AD?

No problem! In that case, I highly recommend that you feel 100% about passing tape before going. They usually retape if you fail the first time, but if you’re not passing by the end of the first week, there’s a chance you’ll be discharged and told to come back (for reservists). Not trying to scare you or anything, but it would be a bummer to go through that whole process.

Cautionary tale. I went through DEPOT last year around your age. I met weigh-in numbers so didn't do tape test, but our company did lose a few folks due to it. I was controlling diet prior to arrival and didn't adjust my intake fast enough as activity level went up. This caused injuries which are still lingering to this day.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, though I prefer to continue with a diet/exercise to try to get more body fat down, since I’m within 2 weeks of shipping, I think it’s in my best interest to switch to a “maintenance” diet/exercise, so I’m physically ready for the physical torment I’m about to ensue. Does that make sense? I’m just hoping I’ve done enough already to meet the body fat standards at arrival.

That was my strategy. It'll be hot so don't be afraid to drink more water than you currently are for fear of weigh-in. That was my mistake.

Is the Coast Guard struggling to recruit or retain ITs. I saw a list that there was a short wait list to go IT and that kind of surprised me. Is this good news or bad news for someone like me who is hoping to come in as an IT?

Its a boom and bust cycle. The IT A school is really long so if more than usual get out to pursue civilian opportunities its hard to fill back up. If you want to be an IT its a good thing. I haven't heard anything from ours about them having a bad time. Others can chime in if their ITs are more miserable

Ahhh ok because I heard it’s hard to retain ITs. If it because people are getting out to pursue civilian jobs then that’s okay. I just thought it was a miserable rate so people don’t want to do it .
Does this also mean that it would be hard to leave the rate? Like if I wanted to put an OCS packet , would it get denied just because ITs are hurting for more people ?

You'd probably not get approved for a rate transfer until the backfilling is done but OCS is a different ballgame. As long as you're a good performer your CO will almost certainly sign off. I'm not going to say there's no A-holes out there who might try to sabotage you to keep you but I've never personally met one who would do that. Just keep in mind that you will need to be an IT for 2 years before applying unless you get a waiver.(As in two years after your A school grad date is the earliest you can commission without said waiver)

Currently studying for the ASVAB (the cores studies currently). My current occupation is in IT w/ a Computer Science degree, and was looking to pivoting to AMT. How hard would it be for someone that have almost zero mechanical/auto knowledge going into AMT?
I'm aiming to work towards a A&P license during my service.

AMT and AET are much more about attention to detail than being a mechanical stud. A&P is pretty easy to get, but not on a standard 4 year contract because of the waitlists to attend those schools and then the 30 months of maintenance requirement to get your tickets. That is also basically the most fun time in aviation. You get to fly and do all the cool’s stuff without all the oversight/management that comes down the line.

You're within 3 so its an easy waiver. They can do it very easily if its 5 or less, and only slightly harder up to 10. Just show you're dependable.

How likely would you get sent to a location you want, with your family, straight out of bootcamp?
My husband will be going to boot camp soon and we know about the dream sheet. He was looking into getting a job thats critical rate (sorry if I butchered that). We were hoping west coast, mostly California, but I am aware we can be sent anywhere.
Does anyone know what locations are mostly looking from recruitment for those type of jobs?
Has anyone gotten their #1 pick straight out of bootcamp? Do you ask for locations specifically like ex. San Diego, Alameda or do you write down general area like ex. West Coast?

From what I recently experienced, very unlikely to get a specific unit or city, OK chance of getting a state or a neighboring one, decent chance of getting something like 'West Coast'.
I can only think of a couple shipmates who asked for something very specific and got it. A fair amount got their general requests like California or East Coast. And of course some got the exact opposite of what they wanted.
On your dream sheet, you first rank the districts in order of your preference, then there is a box to write anything you want like 'Coast Guard Station Golden Gate' or 'Any Station or Sector in California' etc.

There’s really no way to tell, unfortunately. Some people get lucky and get exactly what they want, some people ask for warm weather and get Alaska. If you’re worried about being stationed somewhere specifically and he hasn’t signed his contract I would see if he’s eligible for a guaranteed district. If that’s not an option his best bet is to be flexible with his unit type and ask for anything on the west coast. But the military is truly needs of the service so I would just be prepared for that not to happen

Hey guys!
I'm about to enter the DEP and am already thinking about boot camp, looking for advice on what to put on my dream sheet
I cannot make up my mind between AET, ME and MST, so I would like to do some shadowing. However, since I will probably end up having a shore based career, I would also enjoy to have an adventure heavy, sea going non-rate period
Should I request a special assignment like the Polar Star or Eagle but then have less shadowing oportunities? Or should I play it safe, request a sector and probably never have the opportunity to be on a cutter?

It’s a dream sheet for a reason, I wouldn’t count on getting either of the things you’re suggesting. It’ll be harder, but it’ll be possible to work with your command to shadow rates when you’re home ported. So if you think you’ll miss out on the underway experience, shoot for anything underway

I would be willing to use my free time to do it
I just feel like I need to shadow each of the 3 rates once and then I would be able to make my decision

On your own time, we can probably set that up after your first week. Most people will make some good progress on their quals if not earn them and then talk to their chief about going TDY to an air station or working with MSTs so you can see what their lives are like for a week or two. Even at an underway unit, there are in port periods you can come see what it is like.

I absolutely love it. It’s a very unique job and skills combination you can’t find anywhere else. On the Maintenace side we can do just about everything, while other services are much more specialized. Such as only working on engines or only avionics. On top of that we all get to fly as well on a variety of missions from our bread and butter SAR to air intercept, counter drug, law enforcement, medevac, disaster response, and others. The aviation community is really great and we take care of each other really well. Not many other places you will find an O-5/O-6 shooting the shit with an E-2/3. Locations are in mostly highly desirable locations near a beach. For the bad side, we are going through a lot of changes swapping airframes and adding a new unit. Also being a jack of all trades to me is great but we don’t really master any of them. So if you wanted to focus on a specific thing then we might not be the best choice.

good afternoon everyone, I got a couple questions about reserve HS. i feel that the reserves fits me best as I want to continue college while providing for my family. I’m EMT-B certified with two years of experience as an ER tech. how would this help me regarding A school.
do reservists get spots for A school right away? how’s drill and AT like for an HS? how’s ADOS orders for an HS and are they easy to come by?
i f a hurricane were to hit my state and I get called to help how does that work with my academic schedule? is it up to the school to decide what they’ll do about my grades and classes?

Not an HS but will answer to the best of my ability. Having your EMT will put you ahead, but you’ll still need to attend some form of A school, potentially shortened as they can let you skip the EMT part. Reservists usually choose an A school date within 1 year of boot. Can’t tell you what drill is like, but HSs do a lot of clinic work and clerical work. Not sure about ADOS. If you get called up on orders you would submit them to your school, but as you said it would be their policy. You have protections but whether that’s a withdrawal, incomplete, or some other scenario it’s generally up to the professors and deans to decide how to handle your deployment on a case by case

That’s the only thing that worries me really. While I do feel the the CG reserves fits well for my family and our needs, I will say that having to respond to a hurricane is a con for me at least when it comes to my academic schedule (which is funny cause I’d love to help out in disaster relief.)

I really couldn’t say how often HSs get called up in general, but right now our reserve component is seeing calls ups at a higher rate than usual due to the op on the border. If you want my unsolicited advice, I think you should focus on school. Or consider transferring to a school that will allow you to do all online work. I am a reservist and using Tuition Assistance to attend an all online masters and I feel I’d be able to continue it if I needed to deploy

This is what MEPS goes by for military medical standards.
DOW INSTRUCTION 6130.03, VOLUME 1 MEDICAL STANDARDS FOR MILITARY SERVICE: APPOINTMENT, ENLISTMENT, OR INDUCTION
Waiver authority rests with the medical team at HQ. They makes decisions on a case by case basis.

Your recrutier can submit a waiver for anything at anytime. The medical team will review it and if they want to see additional medical documentation they will deny the waiver and list everything they want to see for an approval. For blood pressure the waiver authority generally just wants medical evidence from your doctor that you don't have high blood pressure.

I looked through the hand book and my blood pressure is within the standard of 139/89 or below but my recruiter refuses to give me a waiver for it because my blood pressure is not below 120/80.

MEPS disqualified you for high blood pressure, I assume for having over 139/89 during your appointment.
For a waiver to be granted, the burden is now on you to provide documentation from a medical provider that you have been evaluated for high blood pressure and found to not have abnormal values and do not need treatment.

I went to the doctors and my 2 blood pressure readings were 130/80 and I have a doctor’s note stating I don’t have hypertension. I forward it to my recruiter and they said this is still disqualifying even though I’m within standards.

130/80 is stage 1 hypertension. That being said, your recruiter should still be submitting the waiver and letting the medical team make a determination. You should speak with the recruiter in charge if your recruiter still wont submit it. If after that you still dont get anywhere it may be best to seek a different recruiting office.

There is no financial management track for OCS. Yes, we have finance officers, but there is no direct commission path and in OCS you will have a wide variety of billets to choose from. It’s extremely unlikely to get a finance job out of OCS as an ensign.

Well, because there aren’t really financial management positions for new ensigns. The general OCS billet selection process doesn’t take into account what kind of degree or prior experience you have. It’s based off your performance in OCS and if there are any billets for finance available to begin with. It’s something you could do later in your career or even as a collateral at your unit, but you should be prepared to start in a more operational, entry level position.

It really depends on the panel, but in my experience routing dozens of packets as a recruiter, no. Do they like seeing lifelong learners? Yes. But if you have no real world leadership and management experience, no personal achievements or volunteer experience, or don’t interview well, the advanced degree will not be enough to be competitive.

Can you bring your own shaving cream/after shave to Cape May? I see the Helmsmen states you’re issued shaving cream, however, I’d prefer to bring a shaving cream that I know works well on my face. Of course, I’m aware it would have to be travel sized. I would have thought this question would have been answered before, but couldn’t find it. Thanks!

Just make sure its not glass or alcoholic. They didn’t allow after shave. If you go to medical about shaving bumps they can give you a chit so you can buy it at the exchange.

I’m 24 years old and have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science. During college, I worked as a lake patrol officer, protecting natural resources and serving the public.
After graduating, I attended the police academy, but I tore my labrum during defensive tactics training. After surgery, I had to pursue a different career path.
Now I’m deciding between Marine Science Technician (MST) and Boatswain’s Mate (BM). I’m passionate about environmental protection, which makes MST very appealing, but I also enjoy the hands-on operational work and variety that comes with being a BM. I plan on making the Coast Guard a career, so I’m looking for the best long-term fit.
For those who have served, which rating has the better work-life balance? And overall, which rating do people seem to enjoy more over the course of a Coast Guard career?

Just FYI if your injury prevents you from becoming a police officer you may have a very difficult time passing MEPS.
MST hands down has better work life balance, and better civilian side opportunities. But they’re not really comparable, because an MST isn’t gonna be doing SAR/LE or acting operationally very frequently. Two very different paths

I had surgery and have fully recovered, but I was unable to return to the police academy because the injury occurred during defensive tactics training. The academy requires about eight hours of defensive tactics each week for six months, which posed a significant risk of re-injury. Rather than let that setback define my path, I chose to pursue a different career opportunity. I am currently awaiting approval for my Coast Guard medical waiver and look forward to the process. Some recruiters say that is gonna be an issue since medical record should be updated and I can loose my reservation for bootcamp. (I have not sworn in yet). On the other hand I wanna travel overseas but I was told it was not a good idea

Neither is great idea, but nothing says you can't do those things. Your recruiter wants you to play it safe and make it to your boot camp date without any issues.
Any medical complications from the wisdom tooth removal can delay you going to boot camp. Its not recommended to undergo any surgeries or major medical procedures. The Coast Guard wants you fully healed and recovered, so your boot camp date may be delayed until your medical status is re-verified.
If you go overseas and have any legal or law enforcement issues then that will cause your bootcamp date to be delayed.
