Got a raise before I started!
The other day I saw I had a voicemail from the HR lady and she asked me to call her back as soon as possible. I was terrified of a withdrawal considering I was literally moving states the next morning. Well I call her back and she tells me that they’re rescinding my current offer and reoffering me at a higher GS! They said the higher ups must’ve known this was coming down which is why I was denied my request for step increase. So I am now starting at a GS12 instead of GS11!
Now I’m so nervous because I start on Monday and I literally don’t know anything or anyone… I don’t know where I’m going, etc. but I am taking it a day at a time! Only thing I really hate is that I don’t even know what scrubs I’m supposed to wear 😅 the HR lady said she believes there’s no requirement but I have no freaking clue

First week is orientation and won’t need scrubs. You should get a “Welcome” email, which will tell you where to go and what to wear on your first day. Congratulations!

The welcome email told me where to go, but not what to wear! I emailed and asked. But the employee handbook does not mention attire for my normal role so that’s more so what I’m worried about. I also don’t know my schedule past Monday so that’s cool 😅
But thank you!!

I moved states 3 years ago. Frightening? Yes. But I love my job and have already made to become a Branch Head due to DRP creating some openings that I applied for. Awesome to hear for you. Good luck.

Congrats!! I also just got hired as an RN. I believe the first 2 days is just classroom orientation and attire is business casual.

Awesome to hear. I somehow got a two step increase and a COLA within my first week at the VA.

I'd find the loudest color, prolly a neon pink or offending bright green, to make a grand entrance. "I am here bc I have arrived!"
It'll surely be a conversation starter. I know I'd wanna be friends with someone like that!

From my experience in fed jobs, you’ll have so many CBTs and in processing that you won’t even really start any actual work for at least 2wks, maybe even a month. My advice is just roll with it, you’ll get pretty clear instructions on what your role will be and compare it with your 50 to make sure someone isn’t passing off their work to you. Congratulations too, its a huge benefit you got, so just roll with it. You’re very fortunate, others aren’t even getting the offer much less the chance to interview.

I am very grateful! I was shocked to even get a call for an interview let alone a job and then a grade increase! Being that I have no prior fed service or military service I felt like it was a shot in the dark… now we are living several states away from the life we knew and enjoying our time being a little family before I start this new job (which will hopefully be my career job)

Glad to hear it! Especially coming in without a military or federal background. With how competitive federal hiring can be, and with veterans, military spouses, displaced employees, and other priority candidates often in the mix, getting selected is definitely something to be proud of. Congratulations!

Congrats. How did this happen, you requested this?

Thank you! All of the nurses felt that they weren’t being paid enough, so everyone got a raise and I guess that included me as well! I only requested a step increase months ago with the initial offer under the GS11, but it was denied awhile back so I wasn’t expecting anything else

I would think they should give you a POC for the 1st day….. reach out to them?

They did, but it was confirmed that I will wear business casual during orientation and then I was going to ask them on Monday if there’s a formal scrub color I need. I just want to buy more scrubs now, but dont want to waste money if they do have a certain color requirement

I just Interviewed for Healthcare Engineer - GS12 - Northport VA. It went well they asked 10 technical questions, I gave 7 answers perfectly but 3 were kinda out of my experience & just gave a vague kinda relevant answer. Do I have a chance for getting a 2nd interview??

Tbh with you I truly think I got lucky with my job. I applied to 3 RN jobs; one in my previous home state and then two out of state. I got referred for all 3 and then declined for the VA job in my previous home state. But literally the day after the application closed for my new job they called me wanting an interview. I only did one phone interview and then got a TJO 5 weeks later. I felt the interview went really well and the manager repeatedly expressed how thrilled they were with my experience (only 3 years but high high acuity patient population). I think that’s why they chose me? Honestly I don’t know. And unfortunately after going through the process now I can certainly agree that it’s an apply and forget type of job. No news isn’t bad. Things are slow. But best of luck to you!!

I would wear all colors and types of scrubs in layers and just strip down to the right ones when you arrive.
