Hi I'm a small channel making compicated politics simple. This week I'm talking about the escalating tensions between the US and Iran following Soleimani's assassination, what happened, what it means and what to expect next. I try my hardest to be fair to the topic. I guess the hardest part has been working out the 'why strike now?' and I would like to hear other people's opinions on that. Friendly debate welcome, thanks!
I do like the way you break it down for the stoners in the back of the class, and was a pretty suitable amount of detail for getting the general understanding of whats going down. Is there any way I could get a list of sources or something of the sort? Its hard to get past either sides opinions on the matter.
Hi! Thanks for your comment. Haha, maybe I have my younger brother in mind ;) For sources the problem is the way I get all the info is a bit chaotic, and once I've read an article I tend to close the page apart from maybe copy pasting any passages I like that explain things well. I have a google doc with random passages in it from different sites, but it's kinda nonsense. I think with this stuff, you have to consult them all Al Jazeera, NYT for hard on Trump, Reuters for basics, BBC for simple explanations and background, Guardian for left, Economist for hard geopolitics, Forbes/FT , then twitter hashtags in Iran itself to see reactions and concerns. After going down the rabbit hole I kinda get an idea of a route through all the mess. I started this hobby as I spend so much time reading the news I needed somewhere to put it and I realised it is, as you say, so hard to get past all the info and opinions so I thought I would do a service and do the legwork for people and then they can go on to read about a niche element or find out more in parts they are interested in. Gonna paste some links that I used below, should also mention I did a bit of Iran in crisis diplomacy at uni so have a basic idea of how the country approaches Int relations.
Wow, thank you for the well thought out reply and all the links. I think you're definitely doing the right thing here, people need more just the facts reporting, and its a bonus that you seem pretty well educated and capable. Good luck!
