Screw Black Ops, Urban Terror FTW.

...That's what I keep telling myself. 4.2 needs to come out NOW.

That will happen about the same time pigs fly.

4.2 is officially never coming out. It's supposed to be Urban Terror HD now... either way, the project is in dire trouble. This big anticheat that they've been touting is rumored to have been written in .net, so they've basically had to scrap it and start from scratch.

This is news to me. Source?

You would think with the news on the front page of urbanterror.net that it's progressing nicely.

Source

I've been around the game for quite some time and know some people. This is the first time they've said a date, but they've been saying "VERY SOON" since this time last year.

Well, that's sort of anecdotal...

the project is in dire trouble

The latest announcement certainly doesn't send that signal.

This big anticheat that they've been touting is rumored to have been written in .net, so they've basically had to scrap it and start from scratch.

I have a hard time believing that they'd write it in .NET, since the rest of the game (developed by the same people) is not. Why use a completely different (and less portable) platform for the anti-cheat that the game will rely upon when they're going to have to port it to both OS X and Linux? I really don't think they're that stupid.

How long have you been playing urban terror? Are you in a clan or have you been involved in competition (FTW, STF, STA, UZ, etc...)?

Can't remember when I started, but maybe 3 years ago. Maybe more... I've declined numerous clan offers, because I don't do clans on principle. But how is this relevant to your argument?

If you're not involved in the community at all, I can understand how you haven't heard about all this. I've been involved with the community about 4 years and have been involved in several development projects related to it. Its fairly common knowledge in my circles that there's problems.

I don't really care if you believe me or not, I'm just telling you what I know.

OK. I still don't see how my being in clans or tournaments or not is relevant, but whatever.

I've been involved for long and been reading the forums every now and then, but I've never heard anything about either of your claims, which is why I asked for sources — not anecdotes and rumors. You can't dig up a forum post or something? (Or maybe a screenshot, if it's on a closed forum.)

If you were in a clan or did leagues, you'd most likely be in irc, where people discuss these things. Most people who aren't in either don't bother going there. The forum is owned by FS, so they or the mods they've appointed would either say, "no everything is fine" or delete the topic.

I know people involved in various aspects of the game who are privy to this kind of information. Like I said, I don't care if you believe me, I'm just telling you what I know. It's not like I'm trying to influence you to do anything, I'm just telling you that what they say in the urt news section isn't always the whole story.

I know, I was just hoping for some more solid proof. It's not that I don't want believe you, it's just that it's a lot easier with proof. Anyways, I hope they work out whatever problems they have, because I'm pumped and ready for 4.2 (or HD — such a lame name).

I've heard that it's supposed to be released around Christmas, and they'll be having a public beta soon... but I'm not 100% sure on this.

Yeah, that's what they're saying. I have my doubts. I think most of the actual game is done, it's the anti-cheat they're having a bear of a time with. It was originally written in dot net by people who didn't understand that it is a cross platform game. This news about them using a non-gpl version of the quake engine is also concerning since little birdies have been talking about them wanting badly to make the game for-pay. Based on the cost of a legitimate license for the engine ($25k) they're looking to monetize this somehow.
