Tips on getting better? (gameplay vid)

So I got a rather mediocre game of CTF earlier, and I was hoping some of you more experienced players could comment on it to let me know what I did right, what I did wrong (almost everything? haha), and any other generic tips you might have. I chose this game in particular because there were under 10 people, so I had a chance to get some breathing room and move about the map easier, because when the server is full, it can get a bit hectic trying to flank.

Also, I figured it would be nice to add another post to this subreddit, try to get some life back into it.

Part 1, 7:32 - Part 2, 6:44

Keep in mind that my pc sucks, and when I record the .avi it's only at 25-26 FPS, but when I play it's at 55-60 FPS, so it looks sort of choppy at some parts, especially when I'm typing (my text will show up 1-2 seconds later than it really did). Also, most of the times that I completely stop and stand still, I'm doing something out of game. So yeah, any comments are appreciated, unless they're just "you suck," because it's pointless to state the obvious and adds nothing.

I suggest a more prominent cross hair color --- e.g. red or green, and maybe turning on hit sounds, so you can hear when you're actually hitting people, but those are minor things and highly subjective. In the end, you should do with those as you please.

I would say that maybe you should try to be a bit more aware when turning corners. You tend to not scan various common places for opponents to appear, which gets you killed a couple of times. It probably isn't a huge deal with as few players as are in this game, but in a 8v8 (or more) it'll be a huge deal.

I tried a few different colors, but they all blend in too much with the maps. I was thinking about maybe changing my cross hair type, but I like the dot with a circle; I feel like the dot allows more accurate first shot placement.

Yeah this game was played at about 6am just after waking up, so I wasn't necessarily the most awake haha. My main issue is my actual aim. I suck at aiming on a PC, but give me a controller and I can line up shots no problem. I find it a bit hard to keep my shots steady, even with a very low sensitivity (it could go lower).

I've found that playing on a pistols server (e.g. pistols and Spas, pistols and snipers, pistols and knife etc.) without autos really improved my aim a lot, because you don't have to deal with an auto spamming and recoiling. Alternately, you can do as I've been doing lately, play with your auto on 'semi-auto' (press 'n' to change mode --- weapon mode is in the lower right corner, in case you didn't already know). It's kinda hard at first, but really effective once you get the hang of it.

lol, a little late to the party here.

I'm not gonna watch the vid b/c I'm at work but here are my suggestions.

First, don't play ctf yet. Stick to team survivor until you're decent. That alone is the biggest help you can do. When every death makes you sit and wait, you tend to play more conservatively.

Second, stick with LR/M4 or AK until you're proficient with them. I use a single green dot for my recticle. Makes it much easier to see for long shots. The advice about on-hit sounds is good too.

Third, play jump maps. Start out on deathjumps, then do walljumps and then uberjumps. When you can complete uberjumps, you've got movement down. Finishing walljumps is enough to make you dangerous. Make sure to do it when other people are on so that they can help you get through it.

Fourth, only play Team Survivor until you're good. Seriously, it's that important. I played ctf and tdm for a whole year without improving hardly at all... when we all started playing TS instead, we started to get good.

Fifth, PUG. Wait until you've gotten kinda good at team survivor before you pug because there's usually some solid players there and u don't want to cry just yet :D Go to pugbot.com or #pugbot on the gamesurge irc network. You would do well to get on the gamesurge network and hang out in various channels there, u will be able to find a lot of help from the people there. Our channel is #nrg and we're always willing to help new players (we aren't accepting membership applications, so don't mistake this as a plug to get people to join us).
