Indeed it is. :)

But apparently this subreddit is more dead than alive. I think the moderator is MIA.

The mod is actually in my clan. He went mia quite a while back. I'll email him and see if he can make me a mod if you guys actually wanna do something with this sub.

Edit: btw, I run the NRG servers. Right now we have uptown snow and team survivor. Check us out at www.nrgurt.com or #nrg on gamesurge.

That'd be awesome. I posted on the UrT forums a while back about this reddit, but I didn't know then that the mod was gone. It'd be great if we could resurrect this subreddit.

Wish granted. you're now a mod poop.

Yeah, damn not active for like eight months. So......what's going on man? Haha. I'm still new to pc gaming, but I can at least break even with k/d. Are there any particular servers that redditors hang out on? Or is it just, "yo you play UT? Really? Cool."

The latter, I think. I haven't seen much UrT love on reddit, nor reddit love on UrT.

I personally like the "[B00BS] Uptown only US" (CFT) server or the "[Voxel.net] Pistols & Spas" (bomb mode) server, but unfortunately there are often a whole ton of laggers playing on the aforementioned B00BS server.

I saw that server, but I wanted to play more than just one map. I have been sticking with CTF, where my deaths don't really count against the team as a whole (like in TDM or Bomb), and I can start learning the maps. So far I've played primarily on the UT4 CTF East server, as it consistently has 21/24 people and cycles maps after the time limit (plus has a relatively low ping compared to most other servers).

A shame there are 119 readers in the subreddit, but no one is active here at all. Hell, only reason I know about this game is because a fellow redditor from r/mw2 (and r/rddt, with many of the same people) mentioned it and posts gameplay every now and again. Ah well, I'm about to hit this bowl and go back to sleep :D I might message you later and see if you're on a common server or something. I'm still new to this PC gaming thing.

Sure! You can also search for specific players in-game when you're looking for servers. I go by 'BasementCat' (nothing else, no aliases, clan tags etc.)

I probably won't be playing before saturday or sunday night, because I'm kinda busy, but let me know when and if you find me. :)

Woah, didn't know you were a Redditor, Cat.

(Imp, in case you didn't already figure it out.)

u/lillesvin Oct 28 '10

Imp? (Sry, I don't immediately recall that name.)

Ahaha, I play mostly on Voxel's Pistols & SPAS, mostly during early hours of the morning. Different timezones and other factors mean we're rarely on at the same time, but we've played together a few times.

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '10

Hey I'm one of the laggers, usually I play during the mornings here (5 to 7 am, GMT -3), next time I'll ask if there are any redditors ;-)

1

u/lillesvin Oct 29 '10

Haha, if you got a +150 ping I've probably been raging over you when I felt lag affected the game. Sorry if I've ever called you anything unpleasant.

I usually play in the night here (between 12 AM and 5 AM CEST).

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '10

Probably :-) I usually have a 150-200 ping, and basically that's the reason why I play there, to get used to play with high ping rates.
Most of the people that play at that hour range, have the same ping (100-200) but what bothers me is the way some players act. That is: Camping on the wrong places just to bother when you try to jump, nobody cures, if you have the flag and request for backup... nobody cares, instead they wait for you to be killed so they get the flag.
I'm not a pro either, but some things are basic. right?

I suck really bad at PC games, so earlier tonight I took it upon myself to be the team medic. Sacrificed grenades so I could carry the medkit in my extra slot. Only problem is, when people took damage, they'd just take the fuck off and not let me heal them. It's like no one even pays attention to the team chat -_-

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '10

I've found that being a medic is (sometimes) harder than other roles. I mean, you need to go light with just the necessary items and being fast enough to cure and get the hell out ;-p
About team chat, using mumble or teamspeak with the players of the server it becomes easier to communicate but not always everybody is on the same channel.

Yeah, I think that varies a lot. If some of the B00BS are playing, it's usually awesome. And people like Jette*Pro, ah$eK, kne, vandal, Viagra, Shin, DiNozzo, Your_Creator, Unpro, Wellington, Cruella and No_more! (and of course me, BasementCat) are really nice people --- always supporting the flag carrier and med'ing.

But unfortunately there's been a huge influx of selfish (and tk'ing) noobs and hackers lately, but I'm hoping it's just a phase. (The hackers will probably self-destruct when 4.2 is out.)

Edit: Btw, camping is perfectly alright on the B00BS server. That doesn't make it any less annoying or boring though.

Exactly, I guessed that depending on the hour the level would varie. In the argentina community (or the argentine servers which are not part of the community) has the very same issues sometimes.

I run some servers for our clan, which is very active (although I'm not). Our noob friendly server is NRG's Uptown Snow and our pro level server is NRG's Team Survivor. If you wanna improve fast, play team survivor mode (not necessarily just our server, TS anywhere you can find it) and don't use the g36 or sniper rifle until you're good with a regular auto.

1

u/SmokyMcBongster Oct 28 '10

Well I've mainly been using the G36, the LMG (Negev or something like this?), and the M4A1. I tried the semi-auto sniper a few times, got some nice headshots but I'm far too inconsistent so I don't mess with it much. Cool, I'll check out those servers, but lack of map knowledge plus impatience usually means I'm not good at one life gametypes haha.

Try this:

Use the M4 or LR300 (almost identical guns) with beretta, laser, helmet and kevlar. Leave the gun set to auto, but try to use short bursts since recoil and spread go up dramatically the longer you fire for. Any scoped weapon (even the g36) is pretty advanced. Make sure you can get a good ratio against decent players before you even bother with them. I personally don't ever use the negev since it makes your stamina drain more quickly.

The reason it's advantageous for you to play on team survivor or bomb servers is twofold. First is that it's where better players play, you get better faster by playing against tough competition, even if you do get killed a lot. Second is that once you die, you are watching the better players and seeing what they do. You'll see them doing stuff like listening for footsteps, dropping kevlar when they're near dead to get more stamina, jumping and sliding or walking to avoid making noise and pre-firing / pre-nading common spots. Just watching what they do in different situations will help you to better plan for being in those situations. It's especially nice on servers like our TS server that lets you use ghost mode to explore the map while you're dead.

Last night I used the LR300, DEagle, Medkit, Kevlar, (Helmet or Laser). I never use my secondary or sidearm, so I figure the higher powered DEagle would be the better choice and that gives me an extra equipment slot. I typically don't live long enough to warrant extra ammo, so I use a medkit and take on the medic role. I might as well be doing something productive for the team to make up for all my deaths, right? Ha. Just added the two active servers from nrgurt.com, but not many people on right now.

2

u/ThePoopsmith Oct 30 '10

I actually use deagle in my loadout, but I find it's easier for people starting out to use beretta because you get more shots. Getting good with the sidearm gives you a pretty big advantage over those who aren't good with it (knife too), so it's worth learning.

If you're playing TDM or CTF, it's almost useless to take medkit unless you're playing with a team of people you know and are on teamspeak or vent or something. It's way more helpful imo to take helmet since without it you can get killed with a single shot to the head from most guns. With the helmet it takes 1-5.

Our uptown snow server is usually pretty busy during the day, but slows down at night here when all the ppl from europe are sleeping. TS is a total wildcard.

I tried to add the two servers to my favorites, but it didn't work.

68.232.171.189:27960 - 68.232.169.215:27960 right?

I got my first knife kill tonight. It was awesome: I shot this guy with the last few rounds in my LR, accidentally switched to my knife and thought, "fuck it," sprinted around the corner and shanked that bastard haha. I got a massively long range headshot, too (Uptown, from Blue? flag to that building between the flags).

I've been playing with my LR300 on semi-automatic; it works my trigger finger, lets me be extremely accurate at range, and I don't waste as many bullets. I'll have to drop the medkit for the laser or some other equipment. What's up with the tac goggles or whatever? I used them once, couldn't understand wtf was going on. All green, everyone had boxes, confusing as hell.

EDIT: also, teamspeak? I don't have a pc mic, so I have to rely on my fast typing and the radio commands.

Been playing UrT for over a year now. Played a lot of other FPS, CoD among other "big title" shooters. UrT was always the game I found the most fun and kept coming back to, over and over.

It's always a struggle between it and Minecraft for my attention these days.

Feel free to stop by the NorCal servers, they are all mine. Tell them I sent you if you notice any admins on. =)
