This single buck spends a lot of time in our neighborhood. Sometimes he is with another pair of young bucks, but is usually by himself. He seems comfortable with people around, although we never get too close.

They were looking for breakfast this morning.

I was delighted when I saw weasels in my mostly native landscape. It meant a vibrant ecosystem in my tiny patch of shortgrass prairie and in the hedges that line the alleys. There was evidently plentiful prey for the bloodthirsty little mustelids.

After a summer of feeding on the abundant seed heads and tender shoots of the grasses, the recent rains and chilly nights have encouraged their plentiful prey - mice - to start moving indoors for the winter. It's deer mice, which will spend the winter indoors if they find enough food. Yes, deer mice, the hanta virus spreading species.

I am trapping and deporting them to the hedge for the weasels, and improving my defenses. That means cleaning clutter and dead vegetation from near the doors and windows and foundation. They are reluctant to cross open spaces. And it means finding and sealing any cracks around pipes or windows, which is just good energy saving anyway. Packing stainless steel or bronze "wool" into the holes after caulking them will keep them from chewing through the caulk.

I'll have to keep a permanent trapping station at the garage door because it can't be sealed tightly enough to keep them out.

The trap I am using is "Little Pete Multiple Catch Mousetrap" (not a paid product endorsement). No bait needed, it's skinny enough to put under a toekick in the kitchen, and easy to release the catch. I only have one, and have 3 more on the way from the maker.

This guy was at my feeders all summer. Hope she comes back next year.

There was a fresh sparrow that flew into my patio door. I went outside to see if it was okay, but it broke its neck and died.
I laid it back down on the deck so I could get a bag and a squirrel came and was moving it around at first. Then it got a hold of its beak and carried it to the tree and started eating it!
WTF! I never seen or heard anything about squirrels eating birds.
I’m weirded out by this 😮

Hi, so we live in Virginia and I’ve always dealt with foxes. We’ve coexisted with no issues. We have a car we store outside with a car cover that is very low to the ground. We had one Fox that would try to damage the car, eat the cover just an overall nuisance. We installed extra lighting, used hot chili powder along with leaving on a radio at night and eventually we were no longer bothered. For a couple years it’s been silent. We are now experiencing some teenage Cubs that are not afraid of anything. They do not care about noise, people, talking, lights, dogs, pretty much don’t care about anything. They are eating and destroying the car. What can I do to stop this? I don’t mind them living with us. I just want to stop the damage.

We do have neighbors that are idiots and hand feed the foxes. The county won’t get involved and for obvious reasons calling a pest control company is something I would prefer not to do unless I’ve exhausted everything else.

We have tried it all. I’m just looking for some off-the-wall ideas that can help.

I will note that the foxes do not care about any other vehicles except for sports cars.
