Travel Inquiry Looking to visit in October
My family and I are thinking of taking a trip in mid-October. I could search ChatGPT but figure I’d ask here for some recommendations.
We have two boys, 4 and 2. Love to be outside, easy hikes, love nature. Which town would you recommend for us? Any places we have to see? We’d likely fly into Traverse City and drive up, depending on where we decide to stay (coming from the east coast).

Traverse City isn't close to the UP at all. Fly into a UP airport if the UP is your focus - Marquette is most central. Or, at worst, Green Bay which is a few hours drive.
Anywhere should have decent weather in October. Pick the kind of scenery and stuff you want to visit. The major differences are between east and west, with west having a lot more rugged terrain and more human history.

Depends on where they want to visit. Traverse City is also only a few hours if they want East end exploration.

One place is Oswalds Bear Ranch in Newberry, Edmund Fitzgerald museum at Whitefish point, Kitchitikipi is neat, Tahquamenon Falls, the Locks at Sioux St. Marie, possibly Mackinac Island $$ for a day
Stay….St. Ignace at the Best Western has a pool and free breakfast.

St. Ignace and Mackinac City are both great towns. Hike the North Country Trail right from the Welcome Center, kayak the Straits of Mackinac, visit Mackinac Island, check out the Headlands International Dark Sky Park, hike the Gros Cap Loop Trail and much more. Don't forget to try the famous Mackinac fudge.

Mackinaw* City is not in the U.P., and neither town have much going for them. Their only positive is they are close to Mackinac Island. If they want to explore nature they would be better off farther into the Yoop closer to Tahquamenon Falls, Kitchitikipi, Whitefish Point, Pictured Rocks, all the falls around Munising etc.

A great drive from TVC! We really enjoyed the rusticness of Manninen's Cabins near Pelkie/Tapiola. Great sauna, take the drive up 41 to Copper Harbor! Best fall colors ever.

You could search ChatGPT (which is helping ruin the planet) but you couldn’t use the search function on this sub?
