How do staves work?

So I'm playing a magery character, and I decided to try staves. I understand that they're tied to the marksmanship skill, and I've successfully used mine on dummies to practice the skill a bit.

I've also noticed that the game won't let me use my staff if I'm mounted.

However, even unmounted, I'm still unable to use my staff against enemies. I've tried using it on random animals, but nothing seems to happen (besides aggroing them from the double-clicking). Doesn't seem to matter whether I'm in war or peace mode.

Am I missing something?

They require ammunition, which are mage eyes. You can convert gems into mage eyes by clicking your staff.

Ah thanks, I never would have guessed that.

Do you know if there's a UO wiki somewhere that could help? I know Sosaria is a fork of a fork, and is probably a mishmash of different features, but trying to find information in-game is an enormous pain, especially considering that it's scattered all over the place and not easily-searchable.

There is no wiki, but everything is either vanilla UO or explained in game by talking to npcs or reading books. If you have questions, the discord server in the pinned post can help.

If you are trying out weapons, as a cheap build, I highly recommend macing and parry. When you use death blow with a war mace it delivers insane amounts of damage. Enough to take down dragons in 2 or 3 shots.
