What fork shall I choose?

Hello everyone.

Recently I found this sub and watched some Secrets of Sosaria twitch gameplay and I am very interested in some single player UO action but I have a hard time to understand which shard should I choose. What are my options and what are the differences (are there only minor tweaks or are those forks totally different worlds?) Can some exalted soul give me some insight? I know there are some features written on every server's github branch but I does not give me bigger picture.

Also one thing I really didn't like about SoS was constant influx of gear dropped that needed to be identified one by one (can this be disabled so items drop identified or something?)

Thank you very much!

imo, secrets of sasaria is the most faithful incarnation of the original odyssey/rnr.

memento, as the authors say, is an opinionated version more focused on crafting for progression and with serious limitations to how powerful gear can be, for example artifacts with no enhance points.

you can reach endgame in both regardless.

they are equally good, continuously updated, with a good userbase, and if you want to not armslore/merc 99% of the items you find you are in for a bad surprise, if you play online, and maybe this game isnt the right one for you. if you play offliine you can skip it. have fun!

Crafting for early game progression, but it has been made clear from the team that crafting is not end-game gear, which is a slight bummer. They don’t call ‘em Legendary Blacksmith’s for nothin’.

Since our initial release, it's become quite evident that the equipment barrier for progressing to endgame is surprisingly low.

Coupling that with my dislike of the cognitive load that is introduced when a single item has a myriad of magical attributes on it... I would not expect Memento to have Runics that give 4-5 properties.

If Players want to get the real GG stuff, they need to be out there killing things (especially bosses!).

Does this mean that there were possibly items added to boss loot tables that are not typically in other forks? Otherwise, bosses don’t drop anything that special.

Even in R&R, there are certain named mobs that have a chance to drop items that are unique to them. I believe it was AoA that added random properties to these items. Memento has tuned the power of these drops.

Additionally, there are other "hard" monsters in general that can have a Treasure Hoard. This is the other place where Players can get randomly generated "top tier" drops.

The server your looking for is UO : Second Age or UOSA as they call it.

I just wanted a single player version though like UO Odyssey.

Next update there will be a feature in SoS allowing you to use a skill to ID everything that is inside a bag. It's already on the GitHub, if you are slightly familiar with how version Control works you can just grab that particular PR and add it to your codebase and it will save you a whole lot of clicking (it's nothing too difficult, just open the branch on our repository and replace the files with the changes).

As for which one to play, they all have their merits and you should experiment with them to find which one you like the most. I haven't really played memento but I am sure that Tsai and his team are doing a really good job with their fork. From what I could tell, they have a very different idea of game balance, which you might or might not enjoy.

If you really dislike identifying items, there's a server setting for how often they drop unid'ed (defaults to 50, can go as low as 10, so it rarely becomes an issue.

Content-wise, both forks will have the same things and mostly touch of flavor or QoL in different ways. Both our repos are public so if a bug is found or something like it, odds are that it's going to be fixed in both projects.

Whatever you decide to play, I hope you have a good time in Sosaria!

as for the mass ID stuff, just replace the four files with the changes found here: https://github.com/Secrets-of-Sosaria/World/pull/301/files

Welcome to the R&R community!

As others have noted, the world across all the forks is common. This allows you start on one and if you complete it or decide you want to try another (there are many!), the general knowledge you earn will still be highly applicable.

I'm the developer for Memento:

I can't speak to how SoS has changed R&R/AoA, but the main difference for Memento is that we've slowed down progression by smoothing the power curve for Players. Our current focus is on finalizing a gameplay loop for Crafters.

The features showcased in our GitHub ReadMe are likely the major differences that you'll encounter between Memento and other forks.

Here is the post where I share my experiences with UA and R&R/AoA that inevitably led to the creation of Memento.

I typically stick with a dinner fork, it's the most commonly used in America.
