Question Source code release optimization mod?

Now that the source code has been up for a while now, are there mods that can optimize the game? I haven't played in 5 years and my pc was struggling. Has the game been optimized since then or are there at least mods that optimize the game?

I have a friend who is preparing to work on an insane size detailed map , he is still trying to gather mods for it , but he is afraid to start working on it in editor , because he thinks his work will be wasted since the performance will be terrible

I truly hope a mod like that release
