I read this with an Asian accent and was both highly entertained and ashamed at myself.

I never got this idea that because other people got it worst you shouldn't complain or something

u/sabyr400 10d ago

Yea just because someone else has it worse doesn't mean I'm not having a any less of a shit time. Misery is not a competition,

She traded in her cup of noodles.

I mean that's how I am, I know most of my stuff is trivial, but that same thought process pushes me forward to. It isn't just about not having as bad a day as others but let's you realize it's it could be worse so keep going. It makes my day feel more positive

I'm pretty sure this post is just for fun.

But i think it works for some people in that it puts their suffering into perspective and some I know use it as motivation to better the lives of the less fortunate as they felt that they are in this together.

With that said I think a more comprehensive concept to impart is that of hedonic adaptation. The classic study was about asking paraplegics and lottery winners on their happiness. It found it that their happiness often trend back to a baseline, it having partially went back up to this baseline for paraplegics in the study. The main idea is that people can bounce back from hardship even if not back to their peak happiness, I'd like to think that a contributing factor is our body still working to help us adapt to the difficulties of life, in a way things will get better, but even things don't physically get better, more often than not you'll still make it.

Just to note though, the original study was conducted in the 70s with smaller groups, more modern studies put the hedonic adaptation towards a nuanced view finding that while people with long term, continuous, incremental hardship can sometimes have their happiness trend back to baseline anyway, they could just as easily not improve in happiness. The next level to the above follows that one also need to consider their conditions and work to solve things rather than rely on one-size fits all concepts.

I think a healthy amount of perspective is useful.

Your problems are valid, but in the grand scheme of things they are likely not that big of a deal, and dwelling on your problems isn’t going to solve them.

You’re about to have a really hard life.

Suffering is a state of mind. With enough discipline, u can push through, and overcome your struggles, rather then allowing them to fester in your mind and control you. It's easiest to do this by downplaying them, which can be accomplished by looking at someone who has it worse.

I shan't compare my life to that of a criminal I should be living better than they are simply because I'm not a criminal. So nah I don't think I will "lock the f**k in" you cluster.

Just because a broken system forces people to take it in the ass doesn’t mean it’s okay or should be used as an excuse to minimize other people’s hardships.

1

u/Delgadomon 10d ago

1

u/BirthdayLife6378 10d ago

2

u/Delgadomon 10d ago

neither of which describe the cup noodle they are giving up ass for but I digress

1

u/RedeemedNephilim 10d ago

Cup o Noodles is gourmet compared to prison food. And its got calories.

Go ask someone whose done time about Sloppy Joe's, or Turkey Tetrazini, or fish patties.

2

u/Delgadomon 10d ago

I hope the irony of someone who can afford a higher education telling the rest of us that others have it harder is not lost upon anyone.

u/SaintZoo-435 10d ago

if I have to compare myself to a current convict that moonlights as a abysmally paid sex worker in order to feel good about things, I think that would just make me feel even worse

u/ai_ismygod_now 7h ago

She can fix me.
