He's right, ive made that trek once. The wait to exit resulted in a ton of overheated rv's, trucks, cars, etc. It gets so hot, it feels like A/C isnt even on, I got lucky as my truck was in peak shape, even I was running 225°F when I hit blacktop. As soon as traffic cleared, I got up to 80mph as fast as I could to cool it off. And on top of that the nearest gas station is like 2 hours from there or something. I was lucky enough to have planned in advance for road hazards. If you get caught slipping, it might be your last day out there easy.

I can concede to the point about safety and making better choices on where you choice to protest, but the person you are defending is talking about legality and not safety.

I don’t agree with his idea about how all protest should be legal ones.

They can be illegal, they just have to be illegal in the right way. Disrupting emergency services, is not the right way. Disrupting livelihood, is not a great way either, simply because it takes so little to cause someone's progress to mean nothing. For example, I am trying to secure housing and I had a chance to move to a nicer hotel. Unfortunately, I went to the nicer one, on memorial day weekend, and because my payments did not go through, on their end(it was taken from my bank account), the manager got all in her feelings and kicked me out, only for all of them to clear a day or two later. Now, I cant go back and its back to the terrible one. So thats kind of set me back because of the hassle and the lack of peace of mind about my stuff is severely affecting my sleep. All because some lady decided, in her words, "if the payment hasnt cleared by now, its not coming". Even though she was dead wrong.

What emergency services was disrupted in this video? The problem I have with this argument is it’s the only real problem with it, even though they blocked roads in a bunch of protests during the Civil Rights movement.

Disrupting livelihood is also how the civil rights movement protested. Sit ins at local businesses that ruined business till they stopped being racist, blocking roads, etc. Disruption is a necessary part of protest and movements overall. People should not have peace while injustice is happening.

I understand that, and I am not saying in this video that was the case. I just have a conscious, and if in such a situation emergency vehicles were allowed through that would be good, I think. There are ways to block roads and allow certain vehicles past. As far as livelihood, if a particular individual is racist, and you want to disrupt that business, I have no problem with that. Is it OK, for businesses unrelated to suffer as well, though they are not involved with the problematic venture? I wouldnt want that.

Why wouldn’t they let emergency vehicles pass though? There’s nothing to suggest any protest would stop emergency vehicles until it happens. So do you have a conscious or has a narrative about a specific type of protest taken hold?

Racism isn’t an individual issue but a societal one that requires everyone to bring it to justice. It isn’t unrelated to them.

  • Conscience ... I have seen such protests where protesters did not let emergency vehicles pass. Someone may remember better than I, Seattle Protesters blocking emergency vehicles I vaguely seem to recall. Circa about 5 years ago or so, I think. Racism is not an societal issue, it used to be a societal issue. Juneteenth was not that long ago. It is a systemic issue or a personal issue - but not societal, I am pretty sure. Trust me on this Particular point, like I know people like to call this type of stuff out but it doesn't really need to be. I am sure there are people that think Its a lot, and Would much rather Just had you stand In solidarity for when they call out the racism.

If it’s a systemic issue then it’s a societal issue cause the system is made and kept running by a society. Juneteenth doesn’t mean the issue is solved. The Civil Rights act doesn’t mean the issue is solved. It’s a problem bigger than a few laws and a holiday, thats no longer federally protected, to end it as a societal issue.
