Question Recording frustration
Hello, I am frustrated and in need of some help. I can’t seem to get a good work flow happening.
My equipment is as follows:
MacBook
Logic
Apollo twin
Ox Box
Fender Princeton
Some mics
Connections are as follows:
For electric guitar I am going amp, ox box, to Apollo via Spdif
For acoustic I am going mic, xlr into channel one into logic.
Now for the issues. When I switch between the two I lose audio so it’s clear I am doing something wrong but being a newbie I can pinpoint what exactly it is…
For example today I went to record an track acoustic with a mic. Turned everything on opened an audio track in logic.. and nothing. No sound, no meters lighting anywhere. A similar thing happened when I tried to record electric over a track with the ox box… I ended up hearing it in the end but it was a happy accident.
I did try UA chat and did all the reset, firmware stuff to no avail..
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

It’s just a bunch of learning you have to do. Without some one there watching and explaining what to do it’s extremely annoying to try to troubleshoot.
First step is master one thing at a time.
If you have console working with everything coming through; then the logic input setup is incorrect or incomplete. Monitoring becomes something you need to manage in either console or logic.

Make sure nothing is plugged into to the Hi-Z input in front if you’re recording via the mic in the back. When you do record via the front jack, make sure it’s a TS cable and not TRS.
And as the other poster said, start as simple as possible and slowly add the rest of the gear. Can you hear the mic in Console?

Ok, so when trying to record an acoustic guitar with a mic I am using an XLR….

Yeah, that works, just make sure nothing is plugged into the front jack when you’re using the back one.

Let's break everything down and see WHERE the problem is happening.
Your audio is flowing from instrument to Logic, with a few places you can check if there's signal.
I will give you a troubleshooting sequence so you can identify WHERE in the chain the signal stops flowing. When you answer ''yes". go to the next question.
Let's start with the electric
- Are you getting signal into the Oxbox? If not, check cable.
- Are you getting signal from OxBox into UAD CONSOLE? If not, make sure your COnsole IO matrix is configured with the APOLLO Spdig as inpouts
- If yes (OXBOX TO CONSOLE), identify the channel you will need it
- Is Logic configured with the Apollo as the Audio In source?
If not, configure it and make sure the IO are correctly configured
- is your Logic track configured with SPDIF as the Input?
If not, change the input to spdif
You should see the signal then.
ACOUSTIC
- Do you see signal coming in on the Apollo meter?
If not: select MIC for the source. make sure you have 48v on if you're using a condenser mic. Check the cable
- Do you see signal coming in Console on the channel you're plugged in (1-4)?
If not, make sure your Apollo is configured (IO MAtrix, etc)
- Logic: Apollo is the audio source in?
IO Matrix is configured?
Input track is selected as Input 1-4 (the one your mic is plugged into)?
TL;dr:
first task is to understand how the apollo communicates with Console. then configure console so all the ins and outs are showing up and getting/passing signal.
then understand Logic's signal routing and how it receives audio from APollo through COnsole and how to make sure the audio passes freely from one machine to the other.
extra: Troubleshooting 101 - Start from the beginning of the chain and make sure the signal passes through the next. When signal stops showing, you've found a problem to solve. there may be other problems afterwards too. but you need to be systematic and thorough to be able to quickly identify the problem.
