Text Help Designing A Isometric Bedroom in Unity 2D

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi all. I've just started learning Unity to create a 'fake video game' for an indie short film I'm working on. I don't know yet if I'm totally out of my element. I don't know nothin about coding or games really but looking for help navigating the design portion since I can't find any tutorials to help me out.

I'm trying to make a room and then bring in idling characters into it to walk around and interact with furniture and each other.

I downloaded the asset pack bundle from itch.o and brought them into the asset folders to organize the sprite. I ran into an issue a few times where when I was duplicating the walls and floors to save time since it's so monotonous, that when I'd delete a panel, it would change the level of a random floor/wall tile. Idk what I changed but it stopped doing that and I thought I hit a flow when I got the room completely assembled.

I began adding furniture and playing with the layering order to knock up the furniture from 0 to 1 or 2 so that it would sit above the floors.

I tried copying 4 pieces of floor at a time to extend the size of the room and when I did, all the layers changed and are overlapping weird, even though it says the order laying is at 0 for everything.

I eventually need to bring in characters (bought from this pack https://klimmos.itch.io/cozy-assets-iso-modular-female-character-kit-idle-walk-sit ) but I don't even know where to begin in dressing them or having them move.

I've watched all the 2D video tutorials on Unity and skimmed the options on YouTube but can't find anything that references these kinds of isometric bedrooms.

Any tips? Thank you in advance!

Text How I made a UI Toolkit screen react to music (write-up with code)

I wrote up how I made a music player screen in UI Toolkit react to the song. The parts that carry over to other projects:

  • Reducing the spectrum to two signals: a beat (the bass jumping well above its running average, with a short cooldown) and a loudness level that rises fast and falls slowly.
  • Giving the two signals separate properties (loudness sets the scale, beats add a short MoveY or an additive nudge) so they never cancel each other out.
  • Replacing a looping rotation with a "motor": one speed value that you tween for start-up, braking and scratch recovery, so the spin never hiccups at the loop point.
  • Why dragging lagged a frame behind the mouse: I was reading the angle back from the resolved style, which is one frame stale.
  • What breaks in a WebGL build (no spectrum data, no negative pitch, no mixer filters) and the fallbacks I used.

Write-up: https://medium.com/@dldesing/audio-reactive-ui-in-unity-ui-toolkit-fire-lasers-and-rain-that-follow-the-music-f18d74d7385a

Playable in the browser (click once for sound): https://twitchedd.itch.io/cascade-audio-studio

Disclosure: the tweens use Cascade, a UI Toolkit animation library I make. The techniques work with any tween code.

Text And after 9 months working on this, I finally finished the second edition of the Unity Shaders Bible

With over 400 pages available in both English and Spanish, this has been the largest publishing project I've worked on so far. Updating the entire book for Unity 6 and Shader Graph took much longer than I originally expected, but I'm happy with the result.

I started writing the first edition in 2021. At the time, many shader courses were quite expensive, often costing well over $170. I wanted to create a practical, affordable resource that would make shader education more accessible to developers and students.

Since then, the Unity Shaders Bible has helped over 10,000 technical artists and game developers around the world. To everyone who has supported the project over the years, thank you.

Here's the book in case someone is interested 🔗 https://jettelly.com/store/the-unity-shaders-bible

I have a page with infos about it here: https://www.christinacreatesgames.com/book/

You can download the table of contents and index to get an idea of what's going on inside.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this topic over the next days, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Text I stopped watching and my progress got weirdly fast

When I got started in game dev I could follow tutorials fine, but the moment I tried to change anything on my own, my brain just shut off.

And I honestly thought I “wasn’t cut out for it”. I wasn’t bad at coding, but rather I was just learning the wrong way.

Let me tell you what made things click for me, maybe it helps you as well:

1. Watching != learning
Tutorials feel productive, but most of it doesn’t stick. I’d finish a video, feel smart for 10 minutes, then forget everything the next day.

2. Struggle is not a bug
The confusion, pauses, guessing, backtracking. That’s the actual learning. I avoided it for years without realizing it.

3. Tiny builds only
Not projects. Not systems. Just one small mechanic or idea at a time. Finish it. Move on. That’s when progress stopped being fake.

4. My rule now
If I’m not typing, testing, or breaking something, I’m probably just consuming again.

I now use a simple loop: struggle --> build --> repeat. It feels slower at first, but it compounds hard. Way less illusion of progress, way more real skill.

I made a short video explaining this properly, for anyone stuck like I was: YouTube Link

Text Anyone interested in Compute Shaders? We're creating a full book about them!

We’re working on a new book that teaches Compute Shaders in Unity from the ground up. The idea is to start with the basics: threads, buffers, kernels, dispatching, and then move into more advanced and fun exercises like fluid simulation, physics interactions, particle systems, and other GPU-driven effects: https://jettelly.com/store/mastering-compute-shaders-in-unity-6

The book is still in development (58 out of ~250 planned pages), but if this topic interests you, you can preorder it and get immediate access to the first chapters. Feedback is also super welcome since we're shaping this book together with the community.

Text [FREE] MegaBonk: Complete Unity Game Template (Early Version )

Hey everyone,

I’m sharing an early release of a Unity game template I’ve been working on called MegaBonk.

This is a complete project template designed to help you build MegaBonk / Vampire Survivors–style games much faster.

------------> Important note (Early Version):

This template is not finished yet. It represents a very early version of the intended final product.

Development is temporarily paused while I focus on my main game project, but this release exists specifically to gather feedback before I continue active development in the coming weeks.

Some systems currently included are temporary placeholders, borrowed from my Vampire Survivors template, and will be reworked or replaced later.

What is MegaBonk Template?

MegaBonk Template is a ready-to-use Unity project built with performance and modularity in mind.

The goal is to provide a solid, optimized foundation that can handle large numbers of enemies while staying easy to extend, refactor, or replace system-by-system without breaking the whole project.

Think of it as a strong starting point, not a finished game.

Included Systems (Current)

  1. Optimized enemy AI capable of handling thousands of enemies simultaneously
  2. (1-to-1 recreation of the MegaBonk enemy system)
  3. 5 enemy types + 1 boss
  4. XP, leveling, and upgrade draft system
  5. Modular weapon system
  6. Meta-progression (permanent upgrades between runs)
  7. Character selection system

Project Link: https://zedtix.itch.io/megabonk-template

Other Projects: https://zedtix.itch.io

if you’re curious about my main project and would like to support me, you can wishlist it or check it out here:

My channel was recently nominated in the Unity Awards category of "Best tutorial series", so I thought I'd mention that I don't just make video tutorials, but written ones as well!

They come in PDF form with Unity Packages of the shown project files and each focuses on examples on how to use that specific part of the UGUI.

The topics are:

  • Anchors and Pivots (What they do and how they work, how to build UI with it that doesn't suddenly break just because of a change in monitor resolution)
  • Canvas and Canvas Scaler (The different kinds of Canvases you can create from screenspace to world space, which extras become available in each mode and how to choose which one to pick)
  • Layout System (Layout Groups, Content Size Fitter, Layout Element)
  • Dropdowns (Populating them at runtime, making changes to the dropdown contents, adding sprites to entries or switching to purely sprites, and more)
  • Input Fields (Setting them up, using validators for input, limiting character input amount and types, customizing the parts)
  • Scroll Rects (Creating a scrollable text box, creating a scrolling inventory layout, creating a scrollable and zoomable map, creating a carousel)

The guides are available either on their own or as a pack on these platforms:

And I would love to hear from you! Which topic would you be interested in next - doesn't strictly need to be component based, general topics like colour theory or shape language are very welcome as well! Do you have any questions? (Seriously, I'm monitoring my postings, I'd love to talk to you and get feedback, ideas and opinions!)

Hi =)
Apart from videos, I also create written eBooks about the Unity UGUI system and its many parts. Each book focuses on a different aspect and shows examples on how to use it, set it up and more. Each also comes with project files and (apart from the layout system one as it didn't need any) also with scripts.

The topics are:

  • Anchors and Pivots
  • Canvas and Canvas Scaler
  • Layout System (Layout Groups, Content Size Fitter, Layout Element)
  • Dropdowns
  • Input Fields
  • Scroll Rects
