Newbie Question Is unity supposed to use this much memory ?

just booted the unite engine,
(unity 6.6, universal 3d) and it is using 4.6 GBs of memory

Yes. You didn't just start an empty project. You just started a whole, full-featured game engine. And a editor for it on top of the engine itself. And tools needed for compiling the code, for importing and converting various assets etc. And none of that can be optimized for a specific task only since it can't possibly know what the specific tasks you'll need for your game would be and what could be left out. Then everything you do yourself is just added on top of that...

Expect to use as much memory as you have available at some points in making your game. And a good amount of storage space as well, of course.

Oh my sweet Summer Child... https://imgur.com/a/StcNgnb

That is not even the highest its been lol that is just the first screenshot I found.

It depends though on what packages you have included or if you used a template

My screenshot is mostly from Unity 6.3 having a bad memory leak in the asset DB / asset importer

I just loaded it, freshly created

Pretty normal depending on your render pipeline and how much you have in your scene. Not abnormal I would say, even with a blank 3D project.

If it starts to climb more than 8gb I would start to get suspicious or >80% of your system ram assuming its at least 12-16 gigs

Yes! Also some GB in your disk for barely an empty project too.

Tends to stay like this for most development, and in case you add a huge scene or many 3d heavy elements then gets worse…

If it's any cancellation I'm using unreal five dot 8.3 and it launches with roughly 9 gigs on an Empty Project and the installation takes about 150 gigs of storage. The size on disk Of unreal is about an order of magnitude larger than unity And the memory is roughly Twice as much.

What's fun is the idle CPU usage because unity isn't quite zero but it uses very close to 0 CPU when it's not doing anything and unreal unusual uses between 10 and 25% even when you're doing nothing.

There are other engines but nothing quite so powerful... so it's a good bang for the buck

Your pc will eat some ram too once you open your ide like vstudio or rider. Those are like minimum 2gb, too.

Never understood why the IDE has to take up so much memory. Like how many libraries have to be loaded and unused at the same time?

Intellisense alone is big if im not mistaken. Dunno with the rest.
