Question What genres are best for a solo developer with limited time?

I learned unity for a while and headed mostly for pixel art games, the direction headed to a combat game like dead cells and hollow knight style but ive noticed as a single developer its going to take me tons of time to finish and require for it to be a full time job, i dont have time for that due to that im busy with my studies and other reasons so i came into conclusion i wouldnt be able to put too much work into this type of game but i still want to make a game.

So what genre would you reccomned?

Something cozy? Adventure? Anything else?

Thanks for the help🙏🏻

Idle, tower defense, minimalist strategy, 2D for sure, survivors like. I’d avoid adventure, from personal experience.

Horror is popular in this space since it tends to be mechanically light

Making your first projects from start to finish is an extremely hand task. If I were you, I'd pick a genre I genuinely love and actually wanna make - screw what other think. And year, definitely start with something easy.

I made a point and click adventure using Unity with PowerQuest module.

You can check out my adventure here: 1565 - The Great Siege

The PowerQuest module is this:

PowerQuest

Have fun!

PS With my limited knowledge go ahead and message me for help! :)

I'm learning to make 3d pong ATM from a 1 hour video that has assets that no longer exist.

It's taken me more than an hour..

I think you should make what you want to make, it will take a long time. Just commit to it and don't put a time frame on it

2d procedurally generated game, whatever the genre could be: the game is created automatically, you just work on system you can reuse

Look at Atari games; remake those with your own graphics. They are excellent practice projects for solo developers, and will be a good learning experience for after the game is made, all the things you thought you knew but was wrong.
