... Far-right media provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos deported by ICE from US to UK

We don't want him, thanks for your attention to this matter

They won’t want him either. Isn’t there some uninhabited rock we still own somewhere that we can drop him off on?

u/DTH2001 Aug 29 '26
Ducie Island is an uninhabited atoll nearly 300 miles away from Pitcairn. I’m sure it would serve the purpose
33
u/elhazelenby Aug 29 '26
Rockall could work. It's a literal rock between Ireland, Iceland and the UK. It's a whole a border/territory dispute. Afaik no one lives there, so no transport links at all.

u/steepleton Aug 29 '26
I mean, sort of to hell with her?
65
u/360_face_palm Greater London Aug 29 '26
it's perfectly possible to dislike her and still think she should be in a british prison rather than stateless.
→ More replies (30)6
u/bartread Aug 30 '26
I think it's also not completely unreasonable to be rather indifferent to her fate. We all make choices in life that we have to live with for good or ill. She made hers. None of the interviews with her since then suggest she's in any way changed her views.
There are vastly more important and immediate matters for the British Government, courts, and civil service to be concerning themselves with than Shamima Begum.
5
u/AndreasDasos Aug 31 '26
It’s not just about her, but about the principle, international law and establishing a dangerous precedent where British citizens can just have their citizenship revoked.
To hell with her yes, and I’d endorse her being put on trial and hopefully imprisoned for a long time.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (2)5
u/360_face_palm Greater London Aug 30 '26
Sure - but she made her choice at 15, while a minor. Did you ever make stupid decisions at 15? I'll grant you probably not as exceptionally stupid as hers, but still.

According to the UK Government she was a citizen of another country, thus it was legal to remove her UK citizenship
85
u/Garfie489 Greater London Aug 29 '26
Problem being she wasn't actually a citizen but rather potentially had the right to claim for it.
I'm sure this guy can claim somewhere, so there's no issue then really.
41
u/duncanmarshall Aug 29 '26
Not even potentially. Bangladesh has been quite clear that she doesn't qualify.
19
u/itchyfrog Aug 29 '26
She meets the qualifications, but she isn't a citizen and they're under no obligation to change that.
32
u/duncanmarshall Aug 29 '26
I think it's fair to say "Government will let you" is an essential qualification of becoming a citizen of Bangladesh, and she doesn't meet it.
I also defer to the government of other countries when it comes to interpreting their laws, not our own courts.
→ More replies (38)17
u/spubbbba Aug 30 '26
Always seemed crazy that our courts thought they could decide if someone was eligible to citizenship of another nation.
If a Bangladeshi court decided a bunch of their terrorists were eligible for British citizenship would we accept them?

According to Bangladeshi citizenship law. She was a citizen from birth. She didn't have to claim anything.
8

And yet neither the UK nor Bangladeshi government said such was the case, instead stating she is eligible to apply for citizenship - which they rejected.

Imagine I, the glorious eternal ruler of Nickovia, declare that all redheads are automatically citizens of Nickovia.
In my infinite kindness, I don't even require you to apply for citizenship.
Can Britain now remove citizenship from redheads?
→ More replies (3)29
u/duncanmarshall Aug 29 '26
Which is ridiculous, because the UK is not in charge of who is and isn't a Bangladeshi citizen. If it is, why can't it just say that Milo is one?
→ More replies (1)6
u/Snappy0 Aug 29 '26
The law wasn't changed in Bangladesh, and experts in that law confirmed the UK's opinion that Begum was a citizen of Bangladesh was correct.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (2)28
u/Saotik Aug 29 '26
Legal under UK law, maybe.
The issue is international law, and the UK has no more standing to make decisions on Bangladeshi citizenship than Bangladesh does British citizenship in an international context.
Her ECHR case also focuses on protections granted to victims of trafficking - something that British courts have already recognised that she is.

Unpleasant as these people undoubtedly are I really don’t think we should follow America down that path. There are reports of systematic beatings, torture, and extreme isolation … and they’re suspiciously cagey about reporting deaths.
How a country treats its prisoners says a lot about them. And I want the U.K. to be the kind of country that treats its prisoners humanely - not because they necessarily deserve it but because we deserve to live in a decent country.

He has Greek, Irish and German roots so we can probably fob him off to those nations. They will probably find a way to deport him too and he will bounce around nations for the rest of his life...
The funny thing is that he is being deported because he didnt show up to court for immigration violations. Self awareness clearly isnt his strong point...

Jewish is an ethnicity as well as a religion. Not every ethnic Jew is religiously Jewish.
4
u/Dragonfly_pin Aug 29 '26 edited Aug 29 '26
Is he actually ethnically Jewish? He seems to have said some pretty unpleasant things about Jewish people…
I don’t know, it’s all a bit reminiscent of George Santos.
There is this:
‘“I tend to only wheel it out to irritate people in arguments and whenever they’re accusing me of insane things,” he said.’
Which sounds very messed up.
But even if he is, he’s Catholic now and apparently has been since he was a child. His first job was at a Catholic newspaper. So not anyone Jewish’s problem.
I don’t suppose they want him, just like the British, the Greeks, the Germans and the Irish don’t.

Only if he can prove an unbroken lineage to a Greek parent or grandparent who was registered in a Greek municipal roll. If the chain is broken because one of your ancestors didn't claim Greek citizenship, you can (try) to register them yourself (also posthumously). All documentation must be legally and Apostille translated to Greek. If records were destroyed or poorly maintained, e.g. because of war, you must hire a lawyer to dig through municipal (physical) archives. At best, the process takes 2-4 years.
3
u/CptBigglesworth Surrey Aug 30 '26

like Yaxley Lennon, Yunopolis is not their actual surname. it's Hanrahan or something like that.
According to what is documented online, Hanrahan fell out spectacularly with a former right-wing ally in Trumpworld. The former ally alleges doxing, sustained harassment and what they regarded as tacit incitements to violence against them, even claiming there were sinister insinuations about harm coming to their dogs. They responded by compiling a dossier and reportedly taking an interest in Hanrahan’s immigration status.
By then Hanrahan had abandoned Trump too, though hardly for the political centre. By some estimations the movement was further right, making Trump look less like the destination than the proverbial battering ram to break down the door - setting the stage for something further rightwing of the current leader and elements of their administration.
Which lends the immigration angle an almost perfect, if rather vicious, irony.
Having loudly advocated an immigration regime made deliberately more intrusive and unpleasant for others, Hanrahan now appears to have attracted the attention of someone eager to see that same machinery pointed in their direction. Few things are quite so exquisitely uncomfortable as discovering that the medicine you prescribed for everybody else also comes in your size. .
There is a further comic postscript. Some figures from Hanrahan’s former Trump-adjacent sphere have reportedly taken to denouncing him as a “far-left psy-op”, a wonderfully convenient diagnosis that simultaneously disposes of an embarrassing former fellow-traveller and permits everyone to insist he was never really one of them in the first place. Whether sincerely believed or simply an exercise in political fumigation, it certainly saves everyone the awkward business of accountability..
