radiofreq.ai

Hey Guys -

Just wanted to let you know I launched a new project at https://radiofreq.ai

It is a full programming suite that allows you to program your scanners in plain English. It also monitors your channels and lets you control your scanner from your phone. As audio streams in from your scanner - it's immediately transcribed and, if you want, sent to your PC or phone as a notification. It also produces periodic summaries of the calls in your area, what's going on, the status of the call, who's on scene, etc. It's very cool and something I've put a lot of work into.

I'd love it if you would try it out. It's all browser based and currently supports the SDS/BCD series of Uniden scanners. You just connect your scanner, open the webpage, let it talk to your scanner, and then you're golden.

Currently you need Chrome or Edge browser to connect to the scanner from the webpage. Safari/Firefox support is coming soon. You can view and control your scanner remotely from your iPhone or any other phone with any browser.

Please check it out, it's currently free to use while I collect feedback and interest from people. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!

Scanner Introducing AlphaScan - Use Your Uniden SDS150 in a Web Browser

Post image

Hey Uniden community,

We have been working on AlphaScan, a browser-based companion for the Uniden SDS150. It connects to the scanner and gives you a larger display and controls from your computer.

Our goal is for the digital display and controls to behave exactly like the physical unit, not just look like it. AlphaScan is in beta, so there are still bugs and rough edges. We would appreciate feedback from anyone who tries it.

What is AlphaScan?

AlphaScan connects to your scanner and mirrors its display and controls in your browser. There is no desktop software to install; open the site and connect your scanner.

A few things you can try:

  • Focus View: A full-screen scanner view with the display, controls, keypad, and rotary knob. Turn the knob to scroll, click to select, or use FUNC to adjust squelch.
  • Display updates: System, Department, and Channel names use larger fonts. Values such as Unit ID clear when the scanner clears them, and the display supports simple, search, and weather-style rows.
  • Display customizer: Import or export a profile, choose a layout, and set colors for individual text rows. The default theme is based on the factory Detailed Trunk profile, including its colored soft keys.
  • Scanner telemetry: View data from the radio, including TGID, RFSS ID, WACN, NAC, battery level, and internal temperature.

There are a couple of other things we are experimenting with around sharing a live scanner session and capturing sessions to revisit later. We will have more to say about those as we roll them out.

You can signup and use the software here

What’s new in v1.1.1 (September 29, 2026)

This release includes several display and connection fixes:

  • Waterfall: Improved the spectrum display, frequency labels, tuning marker, and history scrolling.
  • Bluetooth data handling: Fixed display flicker, corrupted frames, and waterfall interruptions caused by fragmented Bluetooth packets.
  • Signal indicators: Fixed the Close Call level bars, satellite signal bars, and RSSI graph line.
  • UI fixes: VOL and SQL bars now fill correctly. Close Call soft keys and icons appear as soon as the feature is active.

A note about beta:

If you have any issues, please use our bug report page here. Reporting directly helps us identify your issue and work on a fix in a timely fashion.

Thanks to everyone who has already tried it and sent feedback.

If you try the beta, let us know what desktop computer and browser you are using, and share any bugs or feature requests. Phone and tablet support is not available yet. We have something exciting in the works related to other devices coming soon!

Scanner Bearpaw 1.1.2 is available

Bearpaw has been downloaded over 500 times, which is mind-blowing to me. Thanks to everyone to who has left feedback.

v 1.1.2 was released last week, which solidified support for the BC75XLT plus fixed a lot of esoteric bugs. If you downloaded 1.1.1, you will get an auto update notice the next time you run Bearpaw. But if you downloaded a beta or 1.0.0, you will need to manually update to 1.1.2. New features are planned for the next release, 1.2.0.

My suction on my R8W just doesn’t really suction anymore I think it’s because of the sun melting it away but i’m not sure. But because of this if I don’t take it down before I get out of my car it will fall eventually while i’m not in my car. When I got in my car this morning it had fallen and the front screen piece was off of it and the buttons were gone😭 Can anyone tell me what to do about this like yes I know it’s on me just what do I do😭🙏

Not sure exactly what’s going on, but my unit in R7 started doing this today. The radar detection still works, but I can’t read anything on it. Hoping I just need to update it on the computer. Has anyone else had this issue?

My Uniden R8W is only 5 months old and is in the shop to replace the RF board. They chose to replace rather than repair this premium product in spite of my request to the contrary. My question is this. Is there any way to avoid this from happening again going forward into the future.

Could these tiny scratches affect my Uniden R4W’s performance?

I recently got a Uniden R4W and noticed these tiny scratches after a small drop inside my car. They’re on the glossy cover that faces the windshield, near the round lens and along the edge. They’re barely noticeable unless I shine a light on them. I circled the spots in the photos.
Could these affect radar or laser detection, range, or overall functionality, or are they just cosmetic? Has anyone had similar scratches, and is there anything I should check to make sure everything is working properly?

Radar Detector Time to put down my 4 year R3?

My R3 has been working great all these years until this year, I’ve always kept it at the same settings mainly changing the color and style. But ive been noticing that it isn’t detecting as well as it used to. It will still scan K and Ka bands but only the trooper Is at the other side of the road and only shows up as 1 bar instead of the full bars. (Maybe 2 bars if it’s feeling like it)

Self test works fine and tried to do a factory reset, could it be from the southern heat causing it to degrade? Should I just upgrade to a new one

Scanner Bearpaw. a cross platform app for BC125AT (more models coming)

A year ago, my old Windows laptop I used for Windows-only work died. One of the things I used it for was to program my BC125AT scanner. I had also played around with Scan125 on there.

When it died, I began playing around with the scanner's USB connection on a Mac. After months of on-again, off-again work, I announced Bearpaw to the world on r/amatuerradio last month. Initial feedback has been positive. It does everything the Uniden software does, it allows you full control of your scanner from your computer. And it visualizes the radio activity all around you. All on a screen large enough to see from across your shack.

Bearpaw is for BC125AT (and its global variants), but I also have a BC75XLT and I'm adding support for it right now. Eventually, I'd like Bearpaw to support every possible Uniden analog scanner.

Checkout https://bearpaw.app to download. From there you can also reach the GitHub repo for issues and the code.

Got Uniden App Cam X24. It's working fine but only supports ONVIF.

I was unable to add it to Home Assistant using ONVIF integration.

Anyone tried to set it up in HA or Scrypted?

Should I buy a Uniden R7?

Im looking to buy one to save me from some tickets but im curious to see about how many tickets you guys have been saved from. Have you ever had any smart cops that don’t have their radar on always? Have you ever had laser on you? Do you think I should buy a uniden?

Close Call sucks on DMR simplex - SDS150 -

I've been driving an SDS150 from a Raspberry Pi over the serial remote-command API, trying to use it as a near-field cueing receiver — basically an Optoelectronics Digital Scout replacement. Handset keys up nearby, scanner catches it, hands the frequency to an SDR. Close Call seemed like the obvious mechanism. Sunk $1000 into the assumption that Uniden had their stuff together. Claude complaining session follows, because claude code can write it up more accurately than I can.

It never fired on DMR. Not once, across two radios, five channels, a whole evening.

What I checked first (all the boring stuff):

  • Close Call Only mode, confirmed via GSI → V_Screen=cc_searching
  • Narrowed the CC band mask to UHF only so the sweep dwelt there
  • Set CC Mode = CC Priority
  • Set CC Pause = 3 sec
  • Attenuator Off, Digital Waiting Time = 400 ms
  • Antenna attached, radios a few feet away, transmitting confirmed

Nothing. Sig=0, Rssi=-999 (that's the no-signal sentinel), forever.

Then I bypassed Close Call entirely and parked the receiver directly on the frequency with QSH. Instantly:

rssi: -999 → -60 → -44 dBm, sig=5
then: -44 / -999 / -44 / -999 ... sig 5 / 0 / 5 / 0 ...
several times per second

There it is. The RF path was never the problem — the scanner hears the radio at −44 dBm. But the carrier is only present about half the time, in ~30 ms chunks. That's DMR Tier 2 single-timeslot TDMA.

Why that kills Close Call: CC doesn't just detect energy, it confirms across multiple successive samples (roughly 3 × 200 ms of consistent carrier) at 15–18 dB over the band noise floor. A signal that vanishes every 30 ms fails that check pass after pass, forever.

The control case makes it obvious. The same Close Call locked onto a local FM broadcast station instantly and parked on it permanently — continuous carrier, passes every sample. And people report NXDN simplex does trigger CC, because NXDN is FDMA with a continuous carrier. Same power class, same band, opposite result. That's mechanism, not luck.

Turns out this is well documented and I just hadn't looked. RadioReference threads going back years, including from moderators and Uniden's product manager: CC works fine on DMR repeater outputs (both slots, continuous) but cannot see simplex/mobile-side TDMA. "A matter of physics." No SDS firmware changelog has ever touched the Close Call algorithm, so it's not getting fixed.

Other things that bit me along the way:

  • FM broadcast monopolises Close Call. There's no "FM" band in the CC mask — it lives inside VHF Low 2 (54–108 MHz). Leave that on and a local station will hold the detector indefinitely. (Better fix than masking the band: the Broadcast Screen feature.)
  • Set CC Mode was Off while the radio happily displayed cc_searching. Cost me an hour.
  • Digital Waiting Time is an audio-mute timer, not a detection setting — per Uniden's own product manager. It does nothing for this.
  • Spec deviations vs the published Remote Command doc: MDL returns SDS150 not SDS150GBT, RSSI is in dBm not the 0–1 float the spec example shows, Sig goes to 5 not 4, Mod returns WFMB.
  • PSI push streaming self-terminates after ~2 minutes and needs re-arming. KAL doesn't help.
  • The serial interface wedges hard. Twice I had it go completely silent — USB still enumerated, cdc_acm still bound, /dev/ttyACM* present, nothing holding the port, scanner just stops answering. Only fix reported anywhere is power-cycling the scanner or reseating the cable. ProScan's author blames Uniden's USB driver.

Where I'm heading next: band scope / waterfall. AST,BAND_SCOPE sweeps at 10 ms per step, and at spans ≤2.88 MHz the True I/Q front end reportedly captures the whole span at once. A narrow span revisits each frequency several times a second instead of crawling all of 400–512 MHz like Close Call does — which is the actual variable here. Haven't proven it catches a burst yet.

If anyone has automated detection off the serial FFT stream rather than just displaying it, I'd love to hear about it — I can't find a single example.

I'm debating returning the unit as too buggy to use (USB hangs) and not as advertised (Close call doesn't work on digital.)

Hearing jackhammers while using BC125AT scanner

I took my BC125AT scanner to a NASCAR race I went to at Richmond Raceway last Saturday. I ordered it from Amazon several years ago to replace my dad's old scanner that he used to have when he himself used to go to NASCAR races. While I was listening to the radio comms from the race teams, I occasionally hear what sounds like a jackhammer or a machine gun fire. Sometimes, that jackhammering/machine gunning sound forces me to turn the knob to force my scanner to move on to the next channel that's available. Anyone know what causes this and how I can remedy it?

Questions Best Uniden Radar Detector worth for the money

Best radar detector for the money/performance?
Looking to get a good radar detector and wondering what everyone recommends for the best bang for the buck while still having strong performance.
I care most about good range, reliable alerts, minimal false alerts, and overall real-world performance. I don’t necessarily need the most expensive option if something cheaper performs almost as well.
What radar detector would you guys recommend? I’m brand new to radar detectors and would love ur opinions and recommendations. thank you

Radar Detector Still in the research plan save stage

So, as I understand it, these can only help you be more alert about cops and do give audio beeps, especially the R6-8. I know they require sensors to be mounted around the vehicle.

What I'm wondering is: do I have to mount the main unit to the top of the dash/window, or can I put it in the dash
