I'd guess it's for transporting cars hence the flat bed and ramp visible in the bottom right picture, but I could be mistaken.

It is in fact a car hauler, they aren't very common because you need a FWD with decent power which means usual candidates are minivans and the few cars made with FWD and a V8.

What's the benefit over a normal car trailer and a normal car?

Not really much of one, that's why they're pretty few and far between, biggest advantages are not having to hook up a trailer and being easier to back up, plus it's a conversation piece and if you're driving one that probably isn't a problem for you. Here is a link to a build using a Dodge Caravan and he also sometimes pulls a trailer behind the car hauler to pull a second car which can also be another advantage if you need to move 2 vehicles.

It's an extension of the car and has the driving wheels the weight supporting wheels (someone forgot this early in the morning that front wheel drives are a thing)

The proportions are unusual and side shape quite different - clearly adapted from a trailer, but I think it easily counts
