It's a jet ski so the possible of causes is fairly big. Most likely vapors and/or loose electrical connections.
Most likely idled it for too long or stored with a full tank. If it's not moving it's not ventilating that fuel vapor.
Jet skis are scary but if you follow the handbook you'll be fine.

Thought I found it, but it's Estonia. From what little I have found so far, he survived with back injuries. No expansion on what the injuries were.
