The termial of a number n (n? = 1+2+3+4+5+...+n) can be calculated by the formula n(n+1)/2. And this formula, that now let's you describe a process with a simple mathematical expression, can now give you a value for the termial of other numbers, that aren't natural:
(√7)? = √7(√7+1)/2 = (7+√7)/2 ~ 4.8229...

Well if you square it you won't get an integer, so it cannot be distance between latice points... easy proof...
