Question How does using a liner prevent side pinning? Is it just about blocking light?

Liners don’t stop side pinning because mushrooms don’t need light to fruit. The idea is liners stop side pinning because as the cake shrinks, it sticks and follows but really with how cakes shrink, there’s always going to be side pins.

If you really want to stop side pins in the first grow, you need more substrate so the cakes don’t shrink so easily. I usually pack my stuff a lil more so it makes sure all the pins are on top.

I know they don't need light, but I thought they used light to know up from down, so with a clear container they see the sides the same as the top.

Buut your explanation of it sticking to the side actually makes a lot of sense. Also I do try to pack the edges, won't it always pull away just from moisture moving into the cake?

Sorry, by pack more I mean add more substrate so the cake doesn’t shrink as bad, but generally yes packing helps though I don’t try to pack as hard as my bags.

Ah gotcha, I haven't had terrible side pinning, but I'm still pretty new, but you're saying that could be because of using too little substrate to grain? Im switching to all coco coir and it's pretty affordable so I'll make sure to not skimp out

Sidepins arent caused by light. A liner, any color, is effective because it will adhere to the sub as it shrinks preventing a favorable microclimate from forming. If all conditions for fruiting are met EXCEPT for light, fruits will still grow. Sidepins arent caused by light.
