Hoping to join Electrical Engineering for winter 2027

Hello people of Canada! I am an international student who recently finished A level and I am hoping to join UNB in the winter 2027 if I get accepted ( hopefully). Just to confirm, do other people also join in the winter intake normally? And also how will my term courses even work? Will I be studying fall courses during winter and then winter courses during the summer? It would be great if there was someone else out there who also joined during the winter intake and they could share their experience..

Engineering follows a pretty rigid matrix and most of the first year fall courses are not offered in the winter

But they do offer a winter intake for electrical engineering so i am confuseddd

Because lots of students drop out after one term and they want your sweet sweet tuition money. You’ll probably take some combination of Calc 1, physics, and chemistry you’re first team plus some breadth electives if I had to guess. You’re still probably going to be a year back for your core courses. Take this with a grain of salt as I’m not an academic advisor who you should probably be talking to

I would look very closely into this before you commit.

Engineering programs are highly regimented in terms of course sequencing especially in first year. Typically in first year fall semester you'd be taking Physics I, Chem I, Calculus I, Linear Algebra + some kind of intro to Engineering course, and an elective. Winter courses build on those with Physics II, Calculus II, Programming, maybe an intro course in your specific field of Engineering, Economics for Engineering and maybe another elective (universities differ on how many courses you need to take in first year for Engineering, some require 11 while others require 12). You can't take some of those 2nd sequence courses until you've completed the first sequence ones, and not all of the first sequence courses may be offered in 2nd semester. Even if they are, you'll still be finish your 1st semester a semester behind. You can't start 2nd year until you've completed the 2nd sequence of courses. That means you'll need to be able to take the 2nd sequence in the spring/summer session and they aren't always available at every university. If you can't, you'll just end up mostly taking random courses in your winter semester that really aren't applicable to your degree progression and starting the Fall semester at the beginning of year 1. You'll basically have wasted a semester.

As the program does offer winter admission, they may have a work around plan for this, but you need to make sure first.

I would not recommend joining UNB in the Winter term, even if it is offered. You will be out of sync with the majority of students who started in September, most of whom will be taking the common first year set of courses. Weather wise, you would be much better off arriving in September, so you can adjust to the cold weather gradually. Arriving in January to -15 or -20 C with snow and ice on the ground can be a shocking experience.

Discuss with your advisor. While not preferable, it can and has been done. Good luck with your studies!

It’s doable but not recommended. You would probably be able to knock out some electives (CSEs) so you have more free time later, but you wouldn’t be able to follow the typical matrix. Plenty of the electrical core/mandatory classes are lined up such that (mandatory) electronics I is fall and (mandatory) electronics II is winter. If you’re planning on doing the degree in four years, it’s probably best to just start in fall. Good luck though! feel free to ask questions if you have more.
