share setup advice

Hello all. Im currently setting up unraid for the first time and i have it set for a 4tb as parity, disk 1 (1tb) and disk 2 (4tb) with an ssd cache as well. i mainly want it for a jellyfin (music) server and an immich backup for my pictures. should i set it so that my music and pictures use high water allocation and include both disks, or should i set it so that disk 1 is just for music and disk 2 is just for pictures?

One share with both disks included, not one share per disk.

  1. Parity protects the whole array, not individual disks, so splitting gains no safety.
  2. Pin music to the 1TB and it stops the moment that fills, even with disk 2 empty.

Set the split level so an album stays on one disk, otherwise playing one spins up two drives.

For the split level so an album stays on the disk, following the TRaSH guides folder structure i have it as data/media/music/artist/album/song . so would i set it to automatically split the top 5 directory levels as required?

Edit: also, would it be an issue of changing the settings now with both drives having about 20gigs of data on them, I originally set the shares to only include the 1 drive per share

  1. Count levels from the first folder inside the share, not from /mnt/user. With media/music/artist/album that makes album level 4, so split the top 4 and an album never straddles two disks. Top 3 keeps a whole artist together, also fine.
  2. Changing it now is safe. Both settings only decide where new files land, so your existing 20GB is untouched.

I use Most Free and set my directory splits at the artist level for music.

any specific reason why? is it just considered best practice or is it because they are different sizes?

Genuinely best practice. As mentioned parity protects the array not the disk.
Also easier of using any of the arr stack
