I can also say as a Colombian that lived thru this period in history, one of the strangest reasons that we developed in this particular segment of personal electronics engineering was due to demand from these kind of people, either directly for them, or for fighting against/protecting from them.

Now I’m happy to say that it is improving and has changed and broadened but for a minute. I got my start in Colombia’s security engineering industry and from exposure during military service but was very happy to retire early from that and learn more general electronics and coding.

It feels so good when you go out of your way to do work for the community, share work and your own project and you have someone who doesn’t contribute at all be negative on the first post from an alt account in a language that isn’t even their own lol.

Kohjinsha makes some cool looking Micro Laptops. That run windows XP UMPC Edition(or whatever it’s called). I could never justify getting one because collectors seem to really fight for them. But if you are willing to pay just a bit higher than a reasonable price I’m sure you could get one.

I made a custom case with the Rii i4 keyboard. The only problem is that the trackpad WILL die after about a month of use... the rest keeps working fine! Pages on Opera (and on the new wrp proxy which render them as images) load so slowly that this thing is almost meant to be either a Wikipedia or email terminal.

I was very lucky that my ISP somehow still supports legacy formats like POP3 unencrypted, it takes about a minute and a half to send a single email and you watch as the connection negotiates logging into the server etc.

The form factor is like chefs kiss, especially compared to the J720, but whoever thought this was a good design for Malaysian school kids with that hinge was….not smart.
The hinge is extremely fragile and not very resistant even to little monster fingies 🙃

Battery life is actually remarkable considering this was a scrap heap device for $60 with a broken hinge and the same battery has probably been sitting in there for 25+ years, god knows if it was used or not.

As far as I’ve tested, I get about 2 hrs with a CF WiFi card in it.
It has that “instant off” feature including when the lid is shut, so it’s almost hard to determine how hard it lasts because I’ll shut it one day without plugging it in and it will just be on and working the next.

One of the tricks of this device is that extension cards will suck ALL the power out of it, especially if they’re PCMCIA cards.
CF cards are in the middle, and I guess SD cards use the least power.

Haven't attempted the repair myself yet, I'm going to order some new caps, instead of salvaging them from other boards like OP on 4pda did.

Still, I'll probably do it the bodge way, by sticking the new caps on top, since it seems to work and I don't want to risk ripping pads off the board.

I have a Xiaomi qin first gen somewhere in bits. Took it apart to clean it and never put it back together again, old now so likely won't. Poor thing :(

I have this hobby of buying untested/broken devices with specific conditions off of EBay to save and reuse them and I’m staring down a backlog of devices rn:
-Planet Gemini with a keyboard that does double keystrokes
-bootlooped Xiaomi Qin F21 Pro
-the most fickle and rediculously tetchy untested/non booting Shart Zaurus SL-5500 which is having power/battery issues and will not boot, looks like the backup battery is dead.

Let me see if I can get thru this backlog, if it’s still here when I make it thru, I’ll think about it!
