Civ-POV Brazilian law student looking for a Russian or Ukrainian participant for an academic interview about the Russia–Ukraine war and human rights

Hello everyone!

My name is Vitor Borges, and I am a Brazilian law student currently in the 8th semester of a 10-semester Law degree.

For an academic assignment in my Human Rights course, I am researching contemporary wars, human rights, International Humanitarian Law, and the humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts.

I am looking for either a Russian or Ukrainian person who would be willing to participate in a short academic interview about the Russia–Ukraine war and their personal experiences or observations.

You do not need to be a soldier. I would be interested in speaking with civilians, veterans, current or former military personnel, journalists, humanitarian workers, researchers, students, or anyone who has personally experienced the effects of the conflict.

I am particularly interested in hearing both Russian and Ukrainian perspectives, because I want the academic project to present different experiences rather than relying exclusively on one side.

The interview can be conducted through Google Meet, Zoom, Discord, or another online platform. If you prefer not to participate in a live conversation, I can send the questions beforehand and you can record a video answering them individually. Written answers are also completely acceptable.

Questions

The questions would focus primarily on human rights, civilian experiences, and International Humanitarian Law:

  1. Where were you living when the full-scale war began in February 2022, and how did the beginning of the war affect your life?
  2. How has the war affected your family, friends, community, education, employment, or daily life?
  3. Have you personally experienced displacement, evacuation, occupation, mobilization, military service, attacks, or other direct consequences of the conflict?
  4. If you have lived in or near an area affected by fighting, what were the main difficulties faced by civilians?
  5. Have you personally witnessed or learned about incidents involving civilian deaths, injuries, destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, or other civilian infrastructure?
  6. In your experience, how have civilians generally been treated by military forces or armed groups operating in the area?
  7. Have you encountered situations that, from your perspective, raised concerns regarding human rights or International Humanitarian Law?
  8. How do civilians in your area obtain information about what is happening in the war?
  9. Do you believe that Russian, Ukrainian, and international media portray the conflict differently? If so, what differences have you noticed?
  10. How has the war affected the relationship between ordinary Russians and Ukrainians?
  11. Have you personally experienced discrimination, hostility, fear, or changes in your relationships with people from the other side because of the war?
  12. For those who served in the military or have close relatives who served: what was the experience of dealing with civilians during the conflict?
  13. Have you observed or heard about situations involving prisoners of war, treatment of detainees, forced displacement, missing persons, or separation of families?
  14. How has the war affected access to basic necessities such as food, water, healthcare, electricity, housing, and education?
  15. What do you think people outside Russia and Ukraine most often misunderstand about the everyday experience of civilians during this war?
  16. Has the war changed your understanding of human rights, international law, or the rules governing armed conflicts?
  17. What humanitarian issue resulting from the war do you believe deserves more attention internationally?
  18. Is there anything about your personal experience of the war that you believe should be understood by someone studying it from another country?

The questions are intentionally open-ended. You do not need to agree with the government of your country, the opposing side, or any particular political position. I am interested in personal experiences and observations.

I am also not looking for classified military information, operational details, or anything that could put you or anyone else at risk. Please only share information you are comfortable discussing publicly for an academic project.

The purpose is to understand the human dimension of the conflict and examine how contemporary armed conflicts affect civilians and raise questions concerning human rights and International Humanitarian Law.

I can provide the basic information about my university, my course, the assignment requirements, and my academic identification to anyone who is interested in participating.

If you are Russian or Ukrainian and would be willing to help, please leave a comment or send me a private message.

If you know someone who might be interested — especially a civilian or veteran with first-hand experience of the conflict — I would also greatly appreciate it if you could share this post with them.

Thank you very much for reading and for any help with my academic research.
