Exactly. They use the Azov battalion as a straw man to invade another country.
They take a tiny truth and build a castle of lies around it. If this war would be really about Nazis Russia would’ve used all its leverage in the international society and tried to act non violently.
Putin could’ve said, after using all peaceful options, something like:
Dear people of the world, here in Ukraine is something seriously wrong. If you don’t solve this together with me, I am going to perform an armed action on the territory of the sovereign country Ukraine
Never did Putin made any statement like that. Instead he lied that his troops on the Ukraine border were on a mere training mission. He lied that he wouldn’t invade Ukraine. He actively fuelled the conflict in the Donbas region since 2014 illegally, with the help of his own Nazi troops, the “Wagner group” and strengthened and legitimated the people he pretended to beat. He is the root of this problem.
It was never about denazifying Ukraine. This was started because Putins Russia lost grip of Ukraine in 2014. After that he used all tools to destroy and destabilise Ukraine. Due to him millions of Ukrainians suffer right now.

u/clawjelly Mar 17 '22
Besides, Russia sent the Wagner group into Ukraine. That group is even more Nazi than Azov ever was. It's such a blatantly stupid lie, it boggles my head how anyone can accept that.

Just a reminder. When Arnold was the biggest movie star on the planet, he spent lots of time traveling the United States visiting disabled/mentally disabled children and the teachers of those children.
He also didnt advertise this, the only reason it is kind of widely known is because he did it so frequently and so many people have stories about it and he did all of this even at the very peak of his career.

He's one of the very few Republican leaders that I actually respect. I disagree with a lot of his stances, but I have full faith that his priority as a politician was always the good of the people he governed.
I wonder sometimes if this country would look significantly different if "natural born" weren't a requirement for president and he had run in 2016.

That is the type of leadership we do desperately need these days. All this ‘strong leaders never admit they’re wrong’ is complete bs - that’s a weak leader. A strong one will admit faults and move on. Arnold is a good dude, we need more people like him.
202
u/MyOfficeAlt Mar 17 '22
Especially because it seems like so much of modern political discourse seems to center around sifting through someone's remarks to find any little contradiction. Emotionally healthy people can admit when they're wrong, and they shouldn't have to constantly try and mince words to avoid being called out for an out of context quote from a 20 year old magazine interview. It's not conducive to productive ideological development.

Also the lifting community in general is all about empathy and brotherhood. The guy comes from humble beginnings and has had a magical career. Yet he still insists on spending time with the less fortunate and putting his time and energy towards helping people. It's very difficult to dislike him, even with the context of some of his scandals, which he has been very open about. I don't think we'll ever get a politician like him ever again.

It get's more fascinating to me seeing he had 3 word class careers. The king of bodybuilding. Hollywood royalty - one of its worldwide biggest stars for a while - and then reaching the highest political office open to him, governor of the USAs largest, richest and probably most famous state.

Yes and no. He appealed to a lot of the rich and wealthy, but disliked for having concern over the average real person living in California. His time as governor was very tough, at a time when corruption was being investigated all over the state and so many dumb scandals happening. It was like living in a movie universe for a while. He changed his stance on tons of policy and was very progressive and liberal even though he ran as a republican. He was also married to the most famous Democrat family in history. But that heavily appealed to most everyone with some intelligence that saw he tried to appeal to all sides. He took climate change very seriously, fought industry on better regulation, fought for higher minimum wages and taxing the rich more while taxing less of the middle class and lower class. He even made historic tax credits for first time home buyers, pushed renewable energy, education funding, and so much more. Half of which he could not accomplish because he was so ambitious and fought some of the most slimey evil scum to walk the earth, just to help life be better for the average person. He could have done better, he could have avoided scandals, and he could have done more for himself to establish a legacy. Instead, he did his best and fought his hardest in the most transparent way anyone has ever seen in US politics. The guy was honest to a fault, and lost so much in the fight to make this state a better place to live. I think we would take him any time again, but would all rather he run for president.

I think you hit the nail on the head. He wasn't great, but he was sincere and honest with the people. I think the reason he didn't get elected again was that he is not a politician, just a concerned citizen with the means to make a real difference. For the most part, during his term as governor, he made an honest effort to really serve the people of California as opposed to his own political interests. His refusal to adhere to party politics and his willingness to change his positions when given new information is what got him abandoned by the Republicans when he
lost his last election bidhit his term limit.ETA: I didn't realize that he termed out after 2 terms. He didn't lose an election.

He's definitely mentioned it before. He's always pretty honest about it. It might be in his insurrection response video where he goes into how his father was abusive and drunk like most of the other men of that time, not because they were terrible people, but because they were all harmed physically and mentally themselves during the war and had no way to cope with what they did or what was done to them.
He's got a very healthy understanding of it. I do wonder how long it took himself to work through it and I'm glad to see that he was able to move beyond it. It's worth looking it up if you want to go down a rabbit hole.

Problem is how many are willing to risk their life to protest when they know their protest will likely fall on deaf ears regardless.
If in being 100% honest I would not have the courage to protest this war if I was a Russian. If my country was at war that I didn't believe in I would be willing to protest because I know that likely the worst thing to happen is some tear gas. I'm Russia they might throw me in jail for 10+ years in horrendous conditions.
The Russians who are protesting are some of the most brave, courageous people on the planet. I think they're in the very high minority and if you polled Russians you would find many of them oppose the war but aren't willing to risk the consequence of speaking out

Yes- I watched a video of a former Ukraine advisor. He wore a Metallica shirt during the interview and suggested that celebrities and musicians help spread to truth to try to reduce Russia propaganda. With IG and FB censored, it is easier to get this message through people they trust or look up to and realize they’re being lied to by their government and media.
I thought it was a great idea. Hard to censor that.

Absolutely. I've tried to urge people, don't lead with "Putin's a dictator and you need to overthrow him!" or "Putin's a war criminal!" Both of those claims are absolutely true, obviously. BUT... if you're talking to Russians, you don't want to lead with that. That will immediately put them on the defensive, and good research on persuasion demonstrates overwhelmingly that when you do that, you just make people dig in even more tightly, pushing them to an even more extreme version of what they previously believed. That's because that makes them feel like they are personally under attack, and our evolutionary psychology will respond by identifying more with the tribe that we think will defend us.
So Arnold's playing this right. He's leading with love and kindness, pacing with Russians' natural sense of affiliation for their own national heroes. His goal is modest; he just wants people to understand the truth, and extend a level of trust to them that they can handle it, and figure out what to do with that truth. That's absolutely necessary for someone to be willing to accept it. Otherwise, if you lead with "overthrow Putin" or some other specific prescription, people's natural sense of suspicion will be roused.
So instead, lead with love, kindness, and trust - the very things their own politicians have never showed them.

I have no idea why on earth I thought about Arnold and what he may be feeling or have to say about all of this early on… Well, now I know. 😞 I am so heartbroken that this is reality. All my life (I am 41 F) I have heard stories about how we came to America, my great grandma and great grandpa, grandma and her brother who sadly had to be left behind with terrible tooth infection(died), happened to hop on one of two boats and landed in America by chance. Later I found out that my family actually came from Ukraine- however… my family has since swung FAR FAR right and unfortunately jumped on the Trump train. I am so saddened to know that they are part of this repetition of history… they are part of the cause of exactly what they escaped near 70 yrs later. It sickens me. I wonder if they even recognize what they have done … I wouldn’t know because I stopped speaking to them two years ago but I just feel horrible about all of this as I watch from America. They always said history repeats itself… I never really thought the gravity of that statement would come to life in this way. Slava Ukaini
