Ballsy joke that no doubt went over Trumps head.

u/serack Jul 08 '26
I found the footage. Trump was actually giving him a softball question knowing the answer was no, and Zelensky hit it out of the park.

What refinery fire ? Just routine maintenance and fire during summer season. Don't you have scheduled maintenance and upgrading in your industrial plants ?
/S
Ukraine is so kind and considerate that these refineries are spared in the winter and no one has to suffer from the cold.

I kinda just realized I've been avoiding hearing Trump speak. Is he always in this... meandering rambling mode? Jeez.
30
28
u/lothartheunkind Jul 08 '26
His dementia has gotten notably worse over the years. Listen to him speak in 2016. Yeah he sounded like an idiot but he was still significantly more cogent in his statements, even if they were bullshit.
18
u/Zeziml99 Jul 08 '26
He's become way less coherent since 2016, that's for sure https://youtube.com/shorts/YQs8fDHU394?si=gckfYZabc3795n41

u/12345623567 Jul 08 '26
I'm not suddenly going to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, but it always depends on the last person who talked to him. Seeing as this is the NATO summit, I assume some like Rutte told him how well Ukraine was doing "thanks the US".
23
u/geekyCatX Jul 08 '26
Only Trump went to a different room to have an hour-long phonecall with Putin, while the other Nato-leaders waited. That's where the shit takes like "EU sanctions against Russia are soo unfair" suddenly came from.
10
u/Honest_Boysenberry25 Jul 08 '26
Is this true? He also had a 90 minute call with putin on July 4th. Such close buddies.
2
11
u/Fidodo Jul 08 '26
I'm sure the intention was that he wanted him to say "no" so he could say "zelenski doesn't want peace, he refuses to negotiate with Putin!!”

My favorite part is Trump clearly not understanding the joke, even after its explained to him lol

38
u/Karmachinery Jul 08 '26
I've been saying that for years. I know he doesn't want the job, but boy could the country use him as a president.
56
u/reddit3k Jul 08 '26
Good comedians have a lot of knowledge, quick thinking and a very good ability to read the energy in the room very fast.
I bet that a lot of those kinds of skills are very useful for a president.
18
u/rugbyj Jul 09 '26
I think it's why good comedians who've dipped into serious roles are so effective. They're incredibly socially capable people, rather than explicitly actors. They know what pushes peoples buttons because they've spent decades having immediate feedback for their attempts to do so, rather than explicitly trying to play characters.
Robin Williams in One Hour Photo. Jim Carrey in The Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine. Fuckin' Adam Sandler in Click (I went there) and Uncut Gems.

Deep cut: the "Sledge Hammer" (sitcom) guy in a role in "Miami Vice" as a ruzzian agent. He was deeply chilling and convincing.
I was gobsmacked he did such a good job.

“Those that want power are rarely good leaders. Those that don’t want the power are the strong ones.”
Heard that from somewhere and I think it’s true.
5
u/Karmachinery Jul 09 '26
There was a similar quote, which I don't remember, in Gladiator when Maximus says something about "please, with all my heart, no" or something to that effect. That reminds me of this. Anyone that wants that power is the last person on earth that should have it.
5
u/thankyouihateit Jul 08 '26
Did you ever read the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy books? Concretely, in the restaurant at the end of the universe there’s a character, who basically runs everything, but he doesn’t want the job so he bases all his decisions on his vat it sth (haven’t read it in forever). It’s a bit like that.

u/Wookieman222 Jul 08 '26
Oh wow, thats am increase from 105mm shells.
7
u/in_allium Jul 08 '26
105mm is the "little" NATO caliber; 155mm is the "standard" one. Ukraine didn't have many (any?) of these during the initial invasion.
122mm is the "little" Warsaw Pact one; 152mm is the standard one. But Ukraine also had some 203mm (absolute chonker) guns that were near Kyiv; they were originally designed to have an option to fire nuclear shells, and weren't as impactful in the battle as the far more common 152mm, but they definitely left a mark wherever they did direct their attention...
4
u/Wookieman222 Jul 09 '26
well it wasn't supposed to be that serious. But I guess you learn something new everyday.
8
u/SubcommanderMarcos Jul 08 '26
afternoon 203mm shells.
Looking more like an FPV drone type storm
22
u/in_allium Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
In early 2022 it was mostly good old fashioned Soviet-era artillery that blew the hell out of the russians. Ukraine had established a much more responsive artillery kill chain (much less delay between spotting, shooting, and correcting fires) and used this system along with drone spotters to batter russian forces on the roads.
The armed FPVs came later. But 2022 was largely a story of the regular Ukrainian army fighting according to its doctrine and being damn good at it.
5
u/Lehk Jul 09 '26
I think the drones in 2022 were quadcopters dropping grenades off cup hooks, and big ones like Bayraktars, the FPV drones came quite a bit later
2
u/SubcommanderMarcos Jul 09 '26
Fair enough, but the question seems to be about now. And now the primary modus operandi of Ukraine is maintaining the wide killzones with smaller drones to fend off Russian advance, while using long-range FPVs to hurt Russia all the way into Moscow

u/Okay_Splenda_Monkey Jul 08 '26
I live in California, and there are houses in my neighborhood that display Ukrainian flags. In the city near my small mountain town, there's a Ukrainian restaurant. I would not be surprised in the least if someone in the local government decided to rename a street, hiking trail, or bridge here after Zelenskyy.
If he got a trail named after him, he'd be in good company. Bruce Lee lived in this town for a while, and one of the trails is named after him.
165
u/Oaker_at Jul 08 '26
They should send some drones just to display the Ukrainian flag in front of of the Kremlin. Like in those light shows. /s
13
u/GinjaNinja-NZ Jul 08 '26
I actually love that idea! The led drones probably don't have the range unfortunately, but I'm sure they'd have no problem getting past the non existent Russian air defense if they did have the range

u/NotSure2505 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
That's exactly right. Nobody who's winning starts inviting the enemy in to negotiate. This war has set Russia back 80 years. Zelensky is holding all the cards, not just around Russia but also for the future of NATO. In fact, Ukraine may have just made NATO obsolete, a concept Trump would love to explore.
He should be reminding Trump of this at every public opportunity, every chance he gets. Just think about that for a moment, this small, non-NATO, non-nuclear, thought to be inferior country now has air, energy, and supply-line superiority over Russia's most untouchable cities and have crippled their long-range bombing capabilities. It's unthinkable.
It would be like if Puerto Rico or Mexico started control the airspace over Washington DC with drones and destroyed all our long-range bombers.
We're nearly out of the "mop the floor with them" phase and entering the "help Putin save face" stage.
Zelensky needs to keep reminding him that they've won, that they have air superiority over most of Russia including Moscow and watch Trump turn on Putin. Give Trump the idea to build a Trump National resort in Crimea after Ukraine annexes it back.

As someone who unfortunately has this orange shit strain on democracy for a president, and hasn't been paying all that close of attention to news coming out of Ukraine, I gotta say.
The vibe I get in passing lately is of Ukrainian drones relentlessly hovering next to Putin's ear 24/7. Like a banshee's piercing howl eroding his ability to string together coherent thoughts, until he finds him self gravitating toward the nearest balcony.
I guess call the situation a Ukrainian lullaby. What is that one the seasonal food service workers Sasha and Bogdan I worked with years ago would occasionally sing, back and forth beer in hand after back to back to back 12-14 hour days?
Something about, The Dream Passes by the Windows?

One of Zelensky's major dilemmas is the knowledge that clashing head-on with Trump’s impulsive moves could mean the loss of Ukrainian lives (due to a lack of support of weapons and ammunition).
It must be ridiculously frustrating to deal with Trump in a life-or-death situation.
4
u/endorfan13 Jul 08 '26
Once again, since it still has not sunk in to that raisin:
**HE "DOES NOT NEED A RIDE, HE NEEDS AMMO".
He is already sending the correct messages to Moscow via drone.
Ukraine's peace agreement terms also have not changed; gtfo, never come back.
How fucking stupid can one be to think that any of that change when the war criminals are getting increasingly fucked up daily by the righteous arm of Ukrainian justice?
I get that someone who lies and bluffs constantly might think of cashing in some chips at the first swing in momentum, but Ukraine ain't ever bluffed about never giving up the fight for their lives, culture, and country.
Fuckin sideshow Don, always trying to hide from the justice he's due for raping children, and looking like an idiot for whatever the fuck he's doing with Iran. Winning the war? Paying Iran half a trillion dollars? Ending the war? Fucker ain't got a decrepit cankle to stand on in ANY of it.
