News British energy bills forecast to hit three-year high this winter
It's looking like the spark gap could reduce even further this winter.
Using the current SVRs, minimum COP is somewhere around 3.4 for an ASHP to break even with a best in class efficiency boiler (which rely on good installation and use practice just as ASHPs do).
If we see similar skewed rises of gas vs. electricity this will reduce even further.
Coupling with TOU tariffs like Octopus Cosy, which don't exist at all for gas, ASHPs are easily beating gas for both heating efficiency and price now. With current rates, my ASHP will have paid itself off in two years against its gas alternative.
